What's It Gonna Be ?

Posted on 07:35 by Unknown
"You can't face the fact that love means giving something of yourself, and the emotion in your mind is completely tied up with sex, which is abhorrent to you.
What you should do is to buy records of all the love music you can get, from Schubert to Wagner, and drench your soul and your aura in it for hours each day, so that perhaps eventually you might soak up some of the tenderness that's expressed in it!"

-Nial Kent
"The Divided Path"

A funny Italian joke was sent my way this week. I have to share the laughter:

Two old guys, one 80 and one 87, were chatting away one morning.

The 87 year old had just finished his morning bike ride and wasn't even short of breath.
The 80 year old was amazed at his friend's stamina and asked him what he did to have so much energy.

The 87 year old said, "Well, I eat Italian bread every day. It keeps your energy level high and you'll have great stamina with the ladies."

So, on the way home, the 80 year old stops at the bakery. As he was looking around, the lady asked if he needed any help.
He said, "Do you have any Italian bread "
She said, "Yes, there’s a whole shelf of it. Would you like some?"
He said, "I want 5 loaves."
She said, "My goodness, 5 loaves...by the time you get to the 5th loaf, it'll be hard."
He replied, "I can't believe it, everybody knows about this shit but me."

Wednesday

Christopher Cordellos telephoned at 8AM to say he was on his way to the Hotel.
I said, “Okay,” with a frown. It’s too bad he did not get to spend the night in this lush Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

Chris accompanied me to the GUCCI store where I purchased that black travel bag. We also went to the International Male store on Santa Monica Boulevard where I purchased a neat belt and an olive green suede tie.

I took over an hour to locate Paula’s house in Venice again. I finally found it with a little help from Chris. We bid our farewells and I decided to let Chris drive my car. I was too ‘driven out of my mind’ to take the wheel.

It was actually an easy drive back North. We were forced to converse. Chris and I came to terms with many things. We mutually decided that we will only be friends from now on. Chris confessed to feeling hurt (as did I). It is all for the best. This is what I want, too. I realize that Chris is too fickle and flirtatious. I don’t want to be a hurt, innocent, bystander lover.
“So later for him,” I thought silently.

I guess we will not be spending all that much time together any longer. Then again, who knows what the future holds? Tomorrow is September 13th and it would have marked eight months since the day I met Chris.

I played the Bryan Adams album ‘Cuts like a Knife’. That Bryan Adams 1983 song ‘What’s It Gonna Be’ played on during the ride. The lyrics seemed so apropos right now:

If it was up to me
I'd say it's his decision
And maybe you should wait and see
You haven't got a choice
You gotta second guess him
So go ahead

What's it gonna be
Well you need an answer
What's it gonna be
All you get is no reply

If it was up to you
You'd say you need protection
When all you really need is me
Now that's the bottom line
It's your sincere intention
So go ahead

What's it gonna be
Well you need an answer
What's it gonna be
All you get is no reply

What's it gonna be
Well you need an answer
What's it gonna be
All you get is no reply

You've been waiting for so long
Now you say you can't go on
You can't go on, oh no

I did sort of let Chris decide as to ‘What’s It Gonna Be’. I have agreed with the break-up wholeheartedly. As far as I am concerned there is ‘no turning back’ though. I can tell that Chris rather hopes and wants it so that there is an open-ended possibility of turning back to the way we were.
“You’re the best-friend I’ve ever had,” Chris implored.
This statement made me feel good for some reason. He is a special friend to me, too. I will never forget what he did for me. Looking back I have to say we had a lot of good times. It's just that it really is over!

We arrived in Concord, CA at 8:30PM and all of (or most of) his family was there. I left not long after the initial greetings.

I drove to my mom’s house to deliver her Lagerfeld brass perfume gift. She loved it. Mom had ironed all of my shirts and stuff while I was away, too! I could not believe it. She is a sweetheart.

I went home to update my journal a bit and slept after browsing through one of my sexy magazines.

I thought, “I still need to write to Jim Koran.”
I ended up calling Jim tonight.
His recorder had a new voice message with him saying, “I am out having fun.”
He is nice, but I really do not know about him.

Chris Cordellos actually said he may call me in the morning to see about going to the nude beach with Clay and Elliot. He has not called to confirm, so I don’t know. I really feel I want to spend time alone now and with family.

I could ride my bike to Lake Temescal tomorrow. After all, I am still on vacation.

No Matter What

Posted on 07:35 by Unknown
There was no inviting the hurt

-Nial Kent
"The Divided Path"

Have you ever heard of “Boy Zone”?
No, it’s not a place where only boys hang out in cyberspace. It is the name of a boy band from IRELAND that had popular mainstream success in the 1990’s. They were most successful in The Republic of Ireland, Australia, Asia and the UK. The band has released six #1 UK hit singles and four #1 albums, with sales approaching 20 million records as of 2008.

There was a song that they released in August 1998 that I heard about from my mother. It is called “No Matter What”. I don’t know if I introduced her to the song or if my niece, Ashley, did (she was very into ‘Boy Bands’ at this time).

When my mother passed away in January 2000 the tune was played at her memorial service. It has a lot of sentimental value for me. It is also a wonderful song. It is time to share it here on my BLOG.

Here are the lyrics to the 'NO MATTER WHAT' song (and a video LINK of them performing the tune if you care to listen):

Chorus:
No matter what they tell us
No matter what they do
No matter what they teach us
What we believe is true

---------------------------------
No matter what they call us
However they attack
No matter where they take us
We'll find our own way back

I can't deny what I believe
I can't be what I'm not
I know I'll love forever
I know, no matter what

If only tears were laughter
If only night was day
If only prayers were answered
Then we would hear God say

Chorus

And I will keep you safe and strong
And shelter from the storm
No matter where it's barren
A dream is being born
No matter who they follow
No matter where they lead
No matter how they judge us

I'll be everyone you need
No matter if the sun don't shine
Or if the skies are blue
No matter what the end is
My life began with you

I can't deny what I believe
I can't be what I'm not
I know, I know
I know this love's forever
That's all that matters now
No matter what

Tuesday

Training seemed to be another ‘wasted day’. Most of us had to wait around for our individual reviews for our role plays.

At lunchtime Barbara Reynolds and enjoyed Chinese food at the Galleria. We bumped into Teri Milham, a real ‘wench’ of an Assistant Manager that we used to know from Downtown Oakland. She was always so unpleasant towards me.

After work I came home and Chris was not there. He did telephone with his reasons.
“I’ll be right over after my Dad comes over. He wants to show me his new car, a 1971 red SAAB,” said Chris.

I happened to be talking to the geek (Bruce) when Chris rang the doorbell. Chris and I were happy to see one another after so long. He took me for a ride in his neat, classic looking car. It only cost him $800. It does have a look (very ‘77 Sunset Strip’).

We had a drink at Croll’s for old times’ sake. Chris started to talk all about this new guy he had met named Grant.
“I’m just not sure what to do with you hanging over my mind all of the time,” Chris said matter-of-factly.
He was being open about it all at least.
“Do whatever feels right and don’t worry,” I said directly.

We returned to my pad and ‘reunited and such’. It is clear to me that Chris seems to feel we both want to go out with other people. Linda Nannizzi is proof of the pudding (on my part). Now that he is on vacation his promiscuous talk kind of worries me. I must be very wary of that fact.
“Call me around six o’clock tomorrow,” Chris said before he left.

I really don’t think I can call right at that exact time. I will call him when I get home. I refuse to be the aggressor ‘on his tail’. He may call me as much as he wants. It will inform me as to exactly how much time he really wants to spend with me (on his vacation). It is funny. I am on the last page of this journal book. Now that I am coming to the last page it is also like closure of a key relationship.

I must remember what Chris did say.
“We are ‘and know’ we will always be friends,” Chris had said.
I enjoyed being with him tonight but then again something grosses me out about him—in a way. I don’t like the looks of it.

I telephoned Karyn Kossoff to make sure she was watching ’79 Park Avenue’. She is such a nice gal. I respect and love her companionship.

Chris is overly anxious to go out. And “shit”, he said he planned to go to that bar, “The Hub”, in Walnut Creek. I refused to say a word when he told me of his plans to go there. His ‘open, gay attitude’ is making me like him less and less in terms of anything more than friends.

Linda Nannizzi is definitely marriage material but I do need to get to know her ‘deep down’ a lot better. She has not opened up enough to me about her actual self, her likes, dislikes, thoughts and feelings. I want to know her better. As far as marriage goes…I am not even sure if I really want to go there yet (now or ever for that matter).

All I know is that I forecast Chris and I coming to a close; however, we will remain good chums. I, at least, want to be. I guess it’s a matter of him wanting to make time for me and vice-versa. I know he wants to explore. He said it ‘point blank’. If this is the case I intend to close his chapter very soon! I do intend on keeping tabs with him. Tomorrow he is arranging a portfolio shooting with his mom’s friend who used to own an agency of some kind.

I love Leslie Ann Warren as I watched her in ’79 Park Avenue’ again. I want a beautiful relationship and possibly a family one day. I believe the idea of that will always be in the back of my mind. I do know that ‘no matter what’…I am and ‘always will be’ a Happy Man.

Bobbie Renbarger is one really nice lady at work. She is in her late thirties. I know she has never been married. She’s a lot of fun though. I am glad she is my friend. I wrote her a thoughtful letter today. She wrote me a poetic letter that I shall treasure as well.

What A Girl Needs

Posted on 00:03 by Unknown
They were both at fault;
he for being thoughtless and self-absorbed,
she for failing to express and explain her discontent.

-Ira Levin
"Rosemary's Baby"

I finally discovered 'What A Girl Needs' (besides LOVE). I was on that infamous flight from New York to London and began to fiddle with my headphones and found 'Easy Listening' music. There was a CD called 'What A Girl Needs'. Of course, I wanted to know all about it, so I listened to every tune on the CD. When you have a girl that NEEDS something (a birthday gift, a graduation gift, whatever) I honestly believe this to be a GREAT choice.

And if you're any guy, you should have it too. It's always good to know 'What a Girl Needs'.

You may order it here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001JS8RJS/ref=ox_ya_oh_product
Geez...I should get some sort of referral fee for anyone who purchases it, huh?

If you have any doubts then just listen to the first tune and you'll say,
"Yep, gotta have it".

Thursday

I telephoned Salima Nasardeen-Hamilton this morning. She had not opened her gift yet but she was ever so thankful at my thoughtfulness.

Last night (before bedtime) I telephoned Michelle DeBartoli. We gabbed a good while. I wonder how surprised she was to hear from me, considering the fact that we had not spoken in a while. She is so high-fashion. I hope she knows I’m not “joshing” when I tell her that.

I telephoned Danny Garcia to wish him luck at his Regional Skating Competition but he had already left at 2PM (per Mary). Oh well, he will do well.
“I am sure he will place first, second or third because he is so good!” Mary said.
I’m envious and impressed by his accomplishments.

A Figure Skating Champion

Surprisingly, Chris Cordellos telephoned while Jim Severn was with him.
“I just wanted to remind you to not call me at Barb’s house anymore because I am moving out,” Chris said.
I repeated the statements Barb had made about Chris being bisexual and the girl that had spotted him on the porch a couple of weeks ago.
Chris did not reply.
“I’m really bummed,” I confessed.
Chris did not reply.

I went to get my haircut by Danny (since I never got the cut on my previous visit). We had a few drinks together along with his roommate, Mary, and her sister, Dawn. I was still a little down from Chris’ limited conversation. I wonder ‘if’ and ‘who’ and ‘what’ is going on up there with him? Chris had said he moved in with some ‘couple’, so he’s probably getting stoned nightly. I don’t envy him.

Frank Vasconcellos called and I am going to see if I can rearrange my Traffic School for Saturday at SEARS in Hayward. Then we can be in the same class. It will be neat to take that class with someone I know. Talking to Frank has inspired me to go out. Barbara Reynolds neat ‘Bike Card’ inspired me, too.

I drove to Baxter’s (a Restaurant with bar and small dance floor) in Concord. I had a hell of a good time. I met Katie Jones, Mary Vincent, Myra, Karen, Ed and Johnny. I danced with Katie (we were both wearing black). I made a tentative dinner date at Baxter’s for Sunday night with Katie, too. She’s going to call me on Sunday. She is so fine, she blows my mind. Oh Katie!

I arrived in Alameda at 2:30AM or so and a cop pulled me over because I supposedly weaved a bit on Encinal Avenue. Luckily, I was sober enough and mentioned that Al Jayne could vouch for me. I went to high school with Bonnie Jayne and her dad, Al Jayne, was a force to reckon with in the Alameda Police Department. The cop cleared me and let me go. Hoorah!

Sentimental Walk

Posted on 06:45 by Unknown

He stroked the slightly yellowed piano keys lovingly.
He struck one note after another loving the sounds they made,
seeking combinations that were pleasant.

Piano is one of my most beloved musical sounds. I share a tune that I fell in love with many years ago while watching a French film called "Diva". It is known as 'Sentimental Walk'. I urge you to watch the musical video:

I hope to take a 'Sentimental Walk' on this Mother's Day Sunday.

I made no telephone attempts to the Arcata, California region on this day.

I received complement on my business attire of the day.

My speech lasted a mere five to ten minutes. I received applause. That was cool.

I had a lonesome lunch at the ‘Souper Express’. I had soup, a scrumptious sandwich and yogurt. I saw Ms. High Fashion Michelle and Sharon Meadows and I exchanged a few words with them.

After work mom and I went to see Ashley at John and Sherri’s pad. Ashley was home. John was watching a movie called “Class” when we arrived.

When mom and I returned home we watched a ‘Young and The Restless’ and ‘The Edge of Night’. Mom had taped today’s shows on her VCR. Why do I love that girl named 'Raven' on 'The Edge of Night'? She is so carefree and sneaky at the same time.

It was a mellow, relaxed evening. It was especially nice having mom at home for a change (on a weekday evening).

It is 'kind of a drag’ having a flat tire on my bike. I have not escaped for a ride since Monday. I shall make up for this over this coming weekend. Maybe I should ride Tony’s bike. If I did that ‘he’d have a cow’!

Maybe You'll Remember...

Posted on 14:42 by Unknown

Alan and I drove down to Palm Desert on Friday to visit with dear friends. Alan kindly did all of the driving as I read a few articles aloud and my book (Spring Moon by Bette Bao Lord). While we were in the car we heard some music on CDs that we had made a while ago. I heard a song that got me going. I just loved hearing the tune called 'Remember' by The Underdog Project. It's a Spanglish song (with lyrics in English and Spanish). I just love it and we kept playing it over and over.
http://search.live.com/video/results.aspx?q=remember%2C+the+underdog+project&docid=547778002958&FORM=VIVP

When we had phone reception and I had a voice mail message from Chris Cordellos. Yes, I located him via a google search. It seems he's a hair colorist & stylist 'extraodinaire' in Lafayette, CA. We still have to talk and catch up on lost time. I saw him in the mid-1990s when he was working at a hair salon called POSH STUDIO in Walnut Creek but we haven't spoken since. It will be interesting to catch up on lost time.

Twenty-five years ago:

January 17, 1984

I had to stay at work only until 2pm today because of my dentist appointment.

It feels good to listen to my car stereo once again. It brings about such emotion and inner feelings of excitement when the "right" song is playing.

The dentist took good care of everything. I don't have to return for another check-up until June 27, 1984. I was out of his office by 3:20pm. I missed mom by only minutes as she usually leaves the house by 3:15pm for her work at the Oakland Main post-office.

I decided to go to my place and get on my bicycle again. I just love that machine. I bet my bike can't wait until it has another bicycle companion. It probably wishes it could rest. I do want to buy another foreign bicycle.

Today I met Sheila and Liz on the beach as I rode by. Sheila's a cute blond. They were both freshman in high school though. How embarassing. What a drag. Though I sometimes wonder... Who knows? I told them I'd see them on Saturday as we exchanged a few words with one another.
"Maybe I'll see you on Saturday as I usually ride along here," I told them.

I just remembered that the El Taco gal, Nancy, has never called me. Oh well.

I haven't called Leslie Fonseca either. Perhaps that is no great loss. It's just an added attraction (her child). There were some familiar favorites seen as I continued to ride my bike along the shoreline in Alameda. There were some new prospects of both gender. It was quite interesting.

My brother, John, took Sherri out to dinner to "H's Lordships" in Berkeley, for her birthday. I chose to eat alone at the 'Sizzler'. The waitress, Katie, flirted--or so it seemed. I believe we both shared in the flirting. She was very nice but seemed to be that way with all of the guests.
"You look a lot like that actress, Jessica Lange, who was in that movie 'Frances'," I said as I realized the girl had no idea who I was speaking about.

Shit! Why do I have 'call waiting' when my phone doesn't even ring. I decided to break down and call Paloma myself. I was so glad that I called her. We had such a good talk about the subject of depression and 'why' and 'how' people should not be burdened and find a balance in life. Paloma and I may go dancing together tomorrow night at I-Beam in San Francisco. She even said she might come to visit on Sunday to watch the Mel Gibson movie "The Road Warrior" after we watch the SUPER BOWL.
"I promise I will give you a tour of Stinson Beach one day," she added.

I am getting to a high point of really liking Paloma once again. Where? And how far it will lead is undetermined.
"Well, Thank you for calling me and making me feel better over my depressed mood," Paloma said.
"Oh...you just need something that will brighten up your spirits," I assured her, "it could be as simple as buying a new scarf, a new friend, a new place, an old memory, an old story, a poem or a good old-fashioned movie."
I was so happy to know that I lifted her spirits. She did the same with mine.

January 18, 1984

I dressed a bit more exceptional for work today, wearing my brown tweed sport jacket. I received more than one or two 'double-takes', too.

I called Paloma more than a couple of times on this day. It was settled that I would come by to pick her up at 6:30pm. She wore a gray dress with black stripes. Coincidentally, I wore black with my gray "Bebe" brand jacket. We seemed to 'match' as the ideal couple.

We just did a random outing to Round Table Pizza (nothing fancy). It was funny when we were both 'carded'. We both proved our respective 'twenty-four' year old ages. After the pizza we went to the UC THEATER on University Avenue to see "Spetters", a film from Holland, directed by Paul Verhoeven
www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nyTX_BguFg
and a 1974 French comedy drama film called "Going Places" (Les Valseuses).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Going_Places_(1974_film)
They were entertaining films. I was a little surprised to learn of the explicit sex scenes. I was a little embarassed to look over at Paloma during those parts. I will never forget those movies as being entertaining and shocking. Both films proved 'There Is No Such Thing As Simple Love'.

I enjoyed our date. I kissed and hugged Paloma at her doorstep. She confirmed the date for SUPER BOWL Sunday (along with 'The Road Warrior' movie).
"I'm thinking of going back to France for good," she confessed.
I think she wanted to see or hear my reaction.
"Oh...ahh, no!" I exclaimed. I am wondering if she may be looking for a commitment with or from me? Am I reading too much into it?
I was impressed when she said she used to work for Paco Rabonne, the fashion designer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paco_Rabanne

Once I returned home I found John and Sherri on the couch, watching 'Joan Rivers' guest hosting on 'The Tonight Show'.
"Oh, Gilbert called...as did Alexis Budabin," John said.

All Is Full of Love

Posted on 09:21 by Unknown

Ever hear of "Bjork"? I remember she wore that wild n' crazy "Swan" dress for the Acamedy Awards one year. She is currently searching for a new pad in New York City. I know...firsthand. I did a search for one of her music videos and was quite intrigued by the sexy robots here. I'm hooked to the tune. It's a 'must see':
http://search.live.com/video/results.aspx?q=bjork+robot&docid=201329475755&FORM=VIVP11#docid=287903842602

That video isn't as far-fetched as you may think. Scientists have created the first 'humanoid' robot that can mimic the facial expressions and lip movements of a human being. Check out this article...what next, Virtual Sex (as per a previous blog I wrote?). Haha

Twenty-five years ago today

January 15, 1984

It was early Sunday morning and I faintly remember my brother, John, coming home at around 3am, telling me that it smelled like a skunk outside.

I finally woke up to my cousin, Sandy Gallegos, who called to say it was raining; whereby, our bike outing was cancelled. I heard John getting ready and we both went over to mom's house for Sunday breakfast.

After breakfast I accompanied mom and dad to look at some new Centre Court homes for sale on Harbor Bay Isle. We also looked at a casita at 1100 Verdemar. I think my dad is considering an investment purchase. It is still questionable. We couldn't believe the black and filthy dirty heating filter attached to the furnace at the casita home.

I wonder where I will be living in six months?

My brother, John, said that Leslie Fonseca called me.
"She's in love and just wants someone to support her," John said.
I had to laugh. Then again...I wonder. Is she a risk? I don't know if it's a waste of time to lead her on. I don't want to hurt her. She is so nice.

Chris Cordellos called me, too. John answered the phone. I was half asleep, so I told John to tell him I was asleep.
"Take a message," I yelled to him downstairs.
When I did return Chris' phone call his mother answered. I was confused because he had said he had two roommates. It is strange that his mother would answer his phone. Oh well...he is a Pisces (another George Jones?). Another liar? It's too early to tell.

I learned (from mom) that my dad made an offer of $118,000 on the casita on Verdemar. It will be interesting to learn whether or not it will be accepted. It needs totally repainted walls and new carpeting.

I called Paloma and told her about the movies I had available to see. She seems anxious to visit (I think). I'm glad. It would be nice to see her on Wednesday, the night of the Full Moon. I'm such a romantic sometimes. It's funny how I write a lot about how certain people influence my life. Certain events and material things can cause a lot of happiness with me right now. For example, a full moon, my new black lamp, my new 'old bicycle antique' and my poster of France all make me happy.

Shockwaves! Paloma called me at around 8:45pm.
"I can be there in forty-five minutes to an hour," she said.
She is finally coming over to see me and my place. Should I feel privileged? No, I feel happy. We will have fun watching a movie. Who knows what else?

Paloma and I watched "Trilogy of Terror", the 1975 film starring Karen Black.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRxq_E-N72A
Maybe I wanted her to get scared and have her clutch and hug me for protection. It was an 'ok' movie but it didn't seem to phase her. She didn't have a need to clutch me during any of the scary scenes. She liked my place though.

I told her about Gilbert, the modeling agent, and his proposition so-to-speak. She simply laughed about it. I shared some pictures with her that I had taken. She liked them. It was really good seeing her. I am especially thankful that she didn't "light up" (smoke).

Paige LaBris called me from Sacramento (just before Paloma arrived). I like Paige a lot but I just wonder where we really stand together as an item. Will she ever be "HOH" (Head Over Heals) over me. She still wants to visit (with a girlfriend tagging along, of course). It could prove meaningful. Who knows?

Two Drifters...Off To See The World

Posted on 14:36 by Unknown

'There may be trouble ahead,
But while there's moonlight and music
And love and romance,
Let's face the music and dance.'

I read the above line in a greeting card I purchased here:
www.redbubble.com/people/redcow/art/2086228-3-face-the-music

'The Moon' seems to be the subject today as my dear cousin, John Earl Spencer, sent me a music video of Audrey Hepburn, singing 'Moon River'.
http://search.live.com/video/results.aspx?q=moon%20river%2C%20audrey%20hepburn&docid=343789011296&FORM=VIVP
I have been listening to it 'off and on' all day. It soothes my mood. I love the lyrics to this song. Dare I admit it? I have never seen the classic film 'Breakfast At Tiffany's'.

This last Sunday was a turning point economically. I am now a member of NETFLIX. Yes, it is true. I received my first three films today (Tuesday). That was fast. When in NY the cost to see a movie has escalated to $12.50. Outrageous. And so...let's see how things go. Please comment with any of your favorite film recommendations. I just added "Breakfast At Tiffany's" to my que.

January 13, 1984

It is Friday the 13th. It was not all that bad a day for me as I recall the events of the day. Or was it?

Right after my Friday workday I drove into San Francisco from Downtown Oakland. Gilbert was not at his apartment when I arrived. I waited and he showed up within a half hour or so. Gilbert appeared with Natasha, the model, and Geoffrey (some very effeminate black fellow who was visiting from Sacramento). Can you believe I did it? I became a voluntary chauffeur, driving them to the San Francisco Airport. It was an educational driving overview as I had not done the drive to the San Francisco airport in some time.

It was funny when Natasha was held up by security. She had a small golden cigarette lighter that is the shape of a miniature hand gun. It was amusing. They almost wouldn't give her lighter back. I don't know how she could carry a lighter in the shape of a gun anyway. We didn't have time to have a drink in the lounge because of the time constraints. Her flight departed for Los Angeles at 8pm.

When we finally found my car in the parking lot we headed back into The City. I waited patiently for Gilbert and Geoffrey as they fussed and dressed, trying to make themselves look all pretty. After 'brushing up' a bit we headed for the I-BEAM on Haight Street. It's the hot, "mixed clientele" place for dancing in San Francisco.

We arrived a tad early. Things don't start popping until 11pm. The club was not as crowded and the "vibes" were not to my liking. Gilbert was dancing alone on the stage for most of the night. Geoffrey danced a lot 'on the stage' platform, too. I danced a few times with a girl named Ann Voyerera from Vermont. She was "okay". I stood around for a long while until I decided to ask a sleazy looking broad to dance.
"...maybe in about ten minutes," the sleazy broad replied to my dance offer.
That kind of "tee'd me off". And so, I stood around like some wall flower.

Then this guy started to talk to me a bit about the music and the atmosphere. His name is Chris Cordellos. As we were in conversation the most apropos song started to play, "The Chauffeur" by DURAN DURAN.
http://search.live.com/video/results.aspx?q=the%20chauffeur%2C%20duran%20duran&docid=536781914492&FORM=VIVP7
We both agreed that it wasn't an easy song to dance with...though good for listening.

Chris is originally from the Sonoma valley area. He said he now lives in Concord. He was dressed in a somewhat "high-fashion" sort of way. He had naturally curled dirty blonde hair and green eyes. We continued with some good conversation about music when we both mutually decided to take a walk for some fresh air. The dance floor was getting more and more crowded as the night progressed.

While walking with Chris I decided to ditch Gilbert and his chum, Geoffrey. We walked along and he brought up the subject of cars.
"So what kind of car do you drive," Chris asked.
I didn't necessarily like this question because it is supposed to reveal something about you.
"I drive a dirty, old white Volkswagen," I told Chris as we approached my parked car.
When Chris saw my black mustang convertible he smiled and I believe he liked my little fib. We sat in my car and talked some more. We spoke about our family. He shared his take on the modeling scenario and spoke with excitement about Huntington Beach and other southern California beaches. We spoke like two drifters who wanted to see the world. We had our share of silent moments regarding what we should do next. Should we split the scene? Should we go out now for breakfast? And/or should we...? He ended up leaving but we exchanged telephone numbers. Chris Cordellos was my first new friend for 1984. What the heck...

A Free Visit To Brazil

Posted on 12:12 by Unknown
"Music melts all the separate parts of our bodies together."
-Anais Nin

I'm so excited. This morning I was reading the SUNDAY NY TIMES and there was an insert of events at the 'Eli and Edyth Broad Stage' at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center. On Saturday, January 24, 2009, there is a Brazil Tropical Daring Day concert that will showcase local Brazilian musicians in a multimedia show. The event is FREE (provided one calls to reserve tickets) and is made possible by the Brazilian Consulate General of Los Angeles. What can I say? It is an easy and inexpensive way to get a taste of Brazil.

A few years back I discovered a beautiful Brazilian voice (Virginia Rodrigues) while attending an impromptu visit to The Blue Note in New York City. Perhaps I'll be pleasantly surprised by a new Brazilian voice this time around.

Twenty-five years ago today:

It was really a fun day at work today as I found myself playing volleyball between cubicles with Rose Rodarte. Barbara brought in a stuffed soccer ball and it was fun doing the volley with Rose.

A coincidental thing happened as I was flossing my teeth. Suddenly one of my silver fillings came out. The lucky coincidence is that I had a dentist appointment on this very same day. Dr. Hinkle took care of it and now I have another follow-up appointment on January 17th. After my dental appointment I went over to mom's and watched "Edge of Night". I like that actress who plays 'Raven' and the storyline revolving around her young son.

Mom made a great spare ribs dinner. I had to be gentle with my teeth though.

I called Gilbert a little later and he suggested I come by his office at around 5pm so we could go out for a drink.
"Okay," I said as I thought how we tend to make time for the people we choose to make time for. Is it only because we want something from that certain someone?
What do I want from Gilbert? I guess it is a.) friendship and b.) a possible taste into the modeling business. Is it really meant for me? I just wonder whether I have enough potential or yearning for it. I believe Gilbert seems to think I do.

Once I arrived at Gilbert's office I shouldn't have been surprised to see the model, Natasha, there once again. We shared some 'little nothings' talk. Natasha called her mother in New York and I tried to eavesdrop. Then Gilbert received a call from Kevin who said he was on his way (with Olga) to show the outcome of the pictures he'd taken of Natasha.

When Kevin arrived and laid the photos on the table I laughed to myself because I didn't think the photos were anything special. After some chatter about the photos I found myself driving Natasha to Gilbert's pad again. Then Gilbert and I set off on our own to "Pepe's" at Pier 39. It was amazing because my cousin, Vicki Ortega, was our waitress. Her mother, Nellie, is my fathers' half-sister (same mother, different fathers). Another coincidence of the day was that Vicki knew Gilbert! I wonder if she did a modeling gig with him--or what? And I wonder if Vicki thought I was Gilbert's new "boy toy" (scary thought). In any case...what a small world.

Gilbert and I had two margaritas (each) and ate some tortilla chips. We talked more though I maintained my distance (physically and mentally). He was starting to get drunk as I could sense him 'coming on to me' in a more forward way. I could detect it in his eyes.
"I really like you," Gilbert said in a point blank blurt.
I did not flinch or show any sign of being nervous. I knew I did not want any involvement with him in 'that way'. This was for sure!
I was pretty direct with him in saying that I was prepared for a great friendship, nothing more. I started to get the impression that he was feeling that I am after something (like being a model in his agency).

There was just no way I was going to start my first modeling gig 'in his bed' or what have you. After we left Pier 39 I accepted his invitation to his apartment this time around. You can gain some great insight when you visit one's living room. Lo and behold, it was a neat, organized and basic. One lamp seemed to shine over the whole apartment, keeping things dim and mysterious. The apartment wasn't overly impressive. In other words not "A-1 Steak Sauce" (like that sauce is anything special).

The shocking part of the evening soon came forward as I was browsing at the little objects in and around his shelves.
"I would love to make love to you," Gilbert said.
I was stunned. He even started to hint dollar figures like one-thousand dollars, two-thousand dollars. I couldn't believe it. Was he really propositioning me?
"You know, my skin is so soft because I put body lotion all over my body every night," Gilbert said.
No monetary figure he could suggest would get me interested. I thought in my mind about all the different ways I could refuse him. I could run out of the apartment. I could maintain my cool. I felt a very negative attitude within me. I think I suggested something about 'another time' and 'another place' and soon found myself leaving his pad. It could be that we were both the products of one too many Margarita's?

Blue Velvet

Posted on 11:45 by Unknown
I was in the middle of my gym workout yesterday and I thought of a song that I love called "Blue Velvet", so I wanted to share the tune today. I always recall the imagery of Isabella Rossellini singing it in the 1986 film of the same name (Blue Velvet).
www.youtube.com/watch?v=IATxcQ4qebg

I met Isabella Rosellini on May 7, 2006 at the Tribeca Film Festival. She was promoting the works of her father, the Italian director Roberto Rosellini. She didn't look as glamorous but I loved meeting Isabella as her normal everyday self.
www.fotolog.com/michaelarm/24430240
I mean she is the daughter of Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman...after all! I saw Isabella another time in New York City about a year ago. She was alone on 42nd Street and no one recognized her. I adored that she could go out and just be a 'regular person' on the streets of New York. She went inside a theater to buy a solo ticket to see the Broadway production of "Mary Poppins".

The photo illustration above was taken at night during a walk in New York City. The lighting was perfect and I accented the BLUE. I spotted it within a display window on the night of October 29, 2008 and it makes me think of the Blue Velvet song.

BLUE VELVET (lyrics)

She wore blue velvet
Bluer than velvet was the night
Softer than satin was the light
From the stars
She wore blue velvet
Bluer than velvet were her eyes
Warmer than May her tender sighs
Love was ours
Ours a love I held tightly
Feeling the rapture grow
Like a flame burning brightly
But when she left, gone was the glow of
Blue velvet
But in my heart there'll always be
Precious and warm, a memory
Through the years
And I still can see blue velvet
Through my tears

January 10, 1984

Gilbert called me at my office. He asked me to come over to 'Image Photo Lab' in San Francisco to observe the photo shooting of Natasha by Kevin Ward, the photographer. I decided to go for the heck of it.

When I arrived at the 'Image Photo Lab' I saw Olga, Kevin, Natasha, Gilbert and a strange gay looking make-up artist. It was an interesting observation to see them getting prepared. It took such a long time before they finally started taking the pictures.
"It's good for you to see what it's like during a photoshoot," Gilbert said.
I was bemused. My thoughts drifted into questions of where I stand among all of this modeling mess. Where and when it will start and/or end? Will there be pictures taken of me? What is Gilbert's game plan?

After the photoshoot I dropped the make-up artist at Bush & Steiner. Then I dropped off Natasha at Gilbert's apartment. Was I simply the chauffer for the day? I found a parking space and Gilbert and I went to some coffee shop on Polk Street (next door to Fish & Chips). We talked as he showed me some muscle men pictures that he had in a notebook. He also read aloud some personal letters that he had received. The letters were mainly about him and his goodness as a person. The letters seemed to be intimate words from other men that he had--or almost had--intimate relations with. Who knows (in this modeling business) who sleeps with who and for what (is what I was thinking). After this strange ending of his shared letters we ended our conversation. He was still acting very in awe of me. We walked to my parked car and I drove off after we said goodbye. It was good to be back home.

I changed my clothes, freshened up and drove out to San Leandro to the skating rink. I arrived at 10:30pm and I saw George Jones. We talked for a while...but it was brief. Then I saw Jim and we talked for a while...but it was brief. Then I saw Bill Helbush and he expected a bit more from me (like a kiss...I think). I backed away with a flat out "No". My reaction burned him the wrong way. I seemed to hurt him but I think he wanted to make it appear to others in and around the rink that we were "together". He simply walked away. I also spoke to Bryan and Frank. I realized what a dump the place was and I decided to scram. By 11:45pm I was back home, safely in bed. I was thinking and wondering what is in store for 1984. There are no intimate or loving moments yet. I don't intend on diving into a relationship unless I feel it is truly significant.

Dancing Through Some Memories

Posted on 10:30 by Unknown

I heard a song during the drive up to Northern California and I fell in love with the lyrics and melody of this tune once again. It has been a song I have loved for a long time. It's pretty special how a single song can flood back memories.

My friend, Carson, who now has a blog inspired me to write a blog every so often about a song. He likes writing a blog based on a song each day. I love that idea. And so, today I chose this tune, "Hey Eugene".
www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjtekYzkZD4

"Hey Eugene" is based on a true story. China Forbes met a guy named Eugene while dancing in a New York City nightclub. There were fireworks of mutuality and physical attraction when they first met on that night of dancing. And yet, they never saw one another again. I guess Eugene lost her telephone number. Don't we all have a story that is reminiscent of that...or a variation of?

China Forbes is the lead singer for the group PINK MARTINI. Her voice is fabulous. Alan and I were blown away when we saw the group perform at CARNEGIE HALL back on June 21, 2007. I just did an online search and learned that they are playing once again at CARNEGIE HALL on June 18, 2009. I really want to be there.
http://shorefire.com/blog/2007/06/everybody-loves-pink-martini.html

I shot this candid photo of a guy in Soho, NYC (illustrated above) and I just NOW decided to call him "Eugene". If you want to sing-a-long to the tune here are the lyrics:

Hey Eugene do you remember me?
I'm that chick you danced with two times through the Rufus album Friday night at that party on avenue A:
where your skinhead friend passed out for several hours on the bathroom floor and you told me
You weren't that drunk, and that I was your favourite Salsa dancer you had ever come across in New York city

Eugene
Eugene
Eugene
I said hello Eugene
Are you there Eugene

Hey Eugene then we kissed once we lobbed your friend into the elevator and went to write my number on a soggy paper towel
And the car went down
And when we had finished making out we noticed that your skinhead friend was gone. Long gone
And you looked into my bloodshot eyes and said is it too soon if I call you Sunday

Eugene
Eugene

Eugene
I said hello, Eugene
Are you there, Eugene

I said hello (hello), Eugene (Eugene)
Eugene (Eugene)
Eugene (oh yeah)

I said hello (hello), Eugene
Are you there, Eugene (tell me are you there)

I said hello (hello), Eugene (Eugene)
Eugene (Eugene)
Eugene (tell me oh)

I said hello (hello), Eugene (Eugene)
Does any of this ring a bell Eugene?

Twenty-five years ago:

I awoke early to accomplish the nuisance errand of getting my flat tire repaired.
After the chore was complete I returned home and went on a brisk, relaxing bicycle ride. I stopped by Suzy Miller's pad on my bike. We spontaneously went over to OLE's WAFFLE SHOP on Park Street for breakfast. We love that place. We browsed at Tammy's Antiques next door. We saw some local high school acquaintances (Clayton Case and Maureen Dixon). It's funny how you run into folks from high-school. It happens so randomly. The other day I saw Anthony Battu working as a cashier at SAFEWAY.

After breakfast I rode my bike back home from Suzy's pad. I was surprised to find my mom at the townhouse doing her masterful cleaning. She is too sweet.

I called Bill Helbush but he wasn't home. I gave up on that. After ordering a few items from the SPIEGEL catalog and cleaning out my closet I ended up getting a return phone call from Bill. He sounded like he had just woke up (2pm).
"I did just wake up," he said.
I got those quiet (don't want to tell you about last night) vibes.
I said "later" in my mind to our previously made plans of going to the International Book Store in San Francisco. I have also said "later" in my mind to Bill's values and direction in...(whatever direction we were going).

I went bicycle riding again. It exhilarates me and relieves my anxieties. Unfortunately, I got a flat tire (on my bike this time). Luckily, the mishap took place in front of Suzy's apartment complex on Shoreline Road. Suzy was cleaning. I stuck around and ran into Jim (the guy Suzy is sort of seeing how lives in the same apartment building).

Suzy was kind enough to give me a ride home in her car. My parents had just left. John was watching TV (The Doberman Gang).
www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnuRQR-3Ui8
Suzy left after she did some browsing in my Entertaining Cookbook. After she left I went to mom's house to 'pork out' on her Spanish pozole.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pozole

When I returned home I received a phone call from Sherri Lewis. We discussed the happiness she (and everyone) felt over the announcement from John about the new baby. She said she felt kind of "iffy" about the marriage part. She said she's not sure what's going to happen. There is no question what is going to happen around mid-May 2004 though...a baby will be born.

I Believe Disco Is Back In Style

Posted on 14:53 by Unknown
She was the substance and I was the shadow.
--Philippa Gregory
a line I chose that reminds me of when I would dance with Paloma in the early 1980s

My first sign of the DISCO return was about two weeks ago when I opened a letter and found an invitation to a February 2009 Montessori School 'Saturday Night Fever' fundraiser in St. Helena (Napa Valley), California. Secondly, the closing scene of the hit movie 'Slumdog Millionaire' thrived on a group Disco dance groove. And as recently as two days ago my dear, Paloma, from Balaruc-Les-Bains (in the South of France) sent me a 'DISCO BITCH' CD which seems to be one of the rave songs 'in and around' France right now. I believe Paloma wanted to 'brainwash' me by repeatedly listening to the song. I have been doing 'just that' every time I am in the car. I like the mix of French and English it has going on.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEI6qz4Kzyk&feature=related
And what else:
1. On New Years Eve at the San Mateo County Expo Center (near San Francisco) a big 'DISCO 2009' event is being advertised.

2. Apparently there was a French film released in April of this year (2008) called DISCO. I hope it comes to the states. I'd love to see it. It's a French movie directed by Fabien Onteniente with Franck Dubosc as "Didier Travolta" in the main role. Here is what I found on the Internet movie data base:

The main subject of the 'DISCO' movie is the rebirth of disco music at the the mid-2000s in a French town. The film is at first humorous, with a lot of clichés about Saturday Night Fever, but it doesn't disparage the disco culture at any time. In fact, all the people involved in this film are fans of disco, dance and funk music.

I better start practicing my dance steps and shakin' my groove thing...just like the good ole days when Paloma and I used to dance at the I-BEAM Club in San Francisco (even if it was a few years passed the heart of Disco).

"Let's dance before dinner!"
"You're a wild card and I don't know how to play you," he said with brutal frankness.

--Philippa Gregory
as written in her book 'The Other Boleyn Girl'

Twenty-five years ago today:

It was fun today. Salima was on the telephone all day at work. She was seated next to me and making me realize how much I like and care for that girl. She is so super special and "simpatico".

I won "Samuel the Super Spaniel" for best sales yesterday. Hoorah! I am pleased.
I get to have the stuffed dog displayed on my desk for the day.

After work I arrived home and my brother, John, was joking around with his friend, Geoff Rookard. My pal, Suzy Miller, called and we arranged a holiday shopping date. It was coincidental because I had intentions of calling her at the same moment. Suzy came over to my place and we drove out to the Bay Fair Shopping Center in San Leandro. I bought myself a 'bicycle' ornament. We stopped over at the drive-thru Jack-In-The-Box and they tried to screw me over by mistakenly giving me the wrong order. I hate that. Suzy and I laughed, returning to my pad to munch out. She had to leave soon thereafter to cook her 'potluck' stuff for some holiday office affair the next day. She works for AT&T in Pleasanton, CA now.

My brother, John, was nice enough to give me twenty one-dollar bills. I better remember to pay him back. I like dealing with cash. John always has cash from his bar back/bartender in training job at GALLAGHERS at Jack London Square.

I have decided to make my New Year 2004 Resolution a 'no credit card' year. I want to pay only on a cash basis except in dire emergencies.

I watched some new funny show called "Oh Madeline" and then I quickly fell asleep.

Tomorrow is Wednesday and I guess Nici Maurino and I will be seeing SILKWOOD.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KGmkaoIbQo
Oh yes...Helen told me the Placement Center called her about a Directory Sales job. She is taking the test on January 10, 2004. I am so jealous. Suzy said her ex-boyfriend, Don, was promoted to supervisor. I am so jealous. I know my turn will come. I shall continue to be persistent, show stability and drive forward for what I want.

What Good Is a Dream ?

Posted on 17:33 by Unknown
"What harm is dreaming, if it eases pain?
What good is reality if it blots out hope?--Bette Bao Lord in her epic novel about China called SPRING MOON

Do you ever remember your dreams? I would like to remember all of mine but it seems as soon as I open my eyes the pictures and stories are completely gone. I need to keep telling myself I will remember them. The vivid ones where I actually see my mother or father are 'heavy' because they seem all too real. Then I wake up and I realize I cannot just pick up the phone or run over to see them anymore.

Dreams are good. I photographed the above young man in Central Park randomly in November 2008. I have a feeling he was dreaming his problems (if any) away. There are a few songs that come to mind that I love that relate to dreams. Do you know "IN DREAMS" or "DREAM LOVER" or "DREAM WEAVER"?

1. In Dreams
by Roy Orbison (circa 1963)

I believe I fell for this song after seeing the classic cult film BLUE VELVET.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-DjluKLY14
A candy colored clown they call the sandman
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper,
"Go to sleep, everything is alright."
I close my eyes then I drift away
Into the magic night
I softly say a silent prayer
Like dreamers do
Then I fall asleep to dream my dreams of you
In dreams I walk with you
In dreams I talk to you
In dreams you're mine, all the time
With you ever in dreams, in dreams
But just before the dawn
I awake and find you gone
I can't help it, I can't help it
If I cry
I remember that you said goodbye
It's too bad that all these things
Can only happen in my dreams
Only in dreams, in beautiful dreams

2. Dream Lover
by Bobby Darin (circa 1959)

There was always something special about his voice when I heard this one on the oldies but goodies station.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdLn-QhRSB4
Every night I hope and pray
A dream lover will come my way
A girl to hold in my arms
And know the magic of her charms
'Cause I want a girl
To call my own
I wanna dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone
Dream lover, where are you?
With a love, oh, so true
And the hand that I can hold
To feel you near as I grow old
'Cause I want a girl
To call my own
I wanna dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone
Someday, I don't know how
I hope she'll hear my plea
Someway, I don't know how
She'll bring her love to me
Dream lover until then
I'll go to sleep and dream again
That's the only thing to do
Till all my lovers dreams come true
'Cause I want a girl
To call my own
I wanna dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone
Dream lover until then
I'll go to sleep and dream again
That's the only thing to do
Till all my lovers dreams come true
'Cause I want a girl
To call my own
I wanna dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone
Please, don't make me dream alone
I beg you, don't make me dream alone
No, I don't wanna dream alone

3. Dream Weaver
by Gary Wright (circa 1976)
This was one of those songs I liked as a teenager. It sort of took me away on a kaleidoscope, imaginary escape.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=zk4qeCT-RFk
I've just closed my eyes again
Climbed aboard the dream weaver train
Driver take away my worries of today
And leave tomorrow behind
Ooh dream weaver
I believe you can get me through the night
Ooh dream weaver
I believe we can reach the morning light
Fly me high through the starry skies
Maybe to an astral plane
Cross the highways of fantasy
Help me to forget today's pain
Though the dawn may be coming soon
There still may be some time
Fly me away to the bright side of the moon
And meet me on the other side
There is simply something romantic about these songs. I guess that is why I like them.

Work went over just fine except for the fact that my 'secret angel' forgot me. During the holidays every employee in my department secretly picks a name in our group and each employee is responsible for leaving a little gift on the desk of their respective 'secret angel'. I was forgotten.

On the bright side, Salima Nasardeen-Hamilton and I flew paper airplanes from one cubicle to another during non-busy times. We complimented one another on how "HOT" lookin' we were. It was rather amusing. Salima is married to her very own "Michael".

I received a message from Tammy Duhr. I believe she received my Christmas Card. I returned her call when I arrived home and we made tentative Thursday night plans. I also had an answering machine message from Steve Ficarra. He was also thanking me for the Christmas Card. We talked about getting together after the holidays.
Bill Helbush called and thanked me for his "Hershey Kiss" card. We made tentative arrangements for this Thursday night. I guess I might be going out with Tammy or Bill on Thursday night.

I exercised some and called Pac Bell repair service co-worker pal, Nici Maurino. She's always good for some enlightening conversation. She told me abour her weekend and of some big cigar smokin' fellow she met. We made a tentative arrangement for seeing the new CHER movie 'SILKWOOD' on Wednesday night.

I called Juanita Lane (another co-worker at the Business Office) and we discussed work life and her temporary management status assignment. We talked about the possibility of going out sometime. We shared gossip ideas about 'secret angels' and guessed who may have picked who.

I called David Vigil (another co-worker at the Business Office) and we talked about going to Los Angeles for New Years Eve. It could prove fun and interesting. We may go. I think we'd have a good time. He is such a femme fatale though.

I guess George's so-called business is now defunct. I felt sorry for him. He told me to call him again before Christmas but I don't think I will be doing that. After all, there is Juanita, Nici, Tammy, Alexis, Suzy, David, Bill, Mike, Steve and 'God knows who else' (Helen?) all taking up my time in terms of dates, outings and 'what have you'.

It was rather strange when I called Alexis tonight. She said she was just waking up from a dream. She promised to call me right back. She added that if she didn't call back she would call me tomorrow. She never called me.

Dancing Is All About Self-Discovery

Posted on 20:56 by Unknown
"The secret of getting ahead is getting started." --Sally Berger (a quote also found on a Fantesca Chardonnay wine cork).

It was a busy 'last day in New York Wednesday' with a meeting in Brooklyn followed by organizing and packing at home. I am now writing you from the INN AT THE ANASAZI, Suite #224 in Santa Fe, NM. I will be at the Pojoaque Pueblo tonight to see my two year old GodDaughter, Micaela, dance Native American-style for the very first time.

Alan and I had a pre-planned NYC dinner last night with our dear friend, Mimi, and her sister, Joanie, at the Lattanzi Ristorante Italiano. The fettucine al ragu was 'delicioso'. Mimi and Joanie were en route to see the Broadway play August: Osage County. Our intention was to eat and return home to finish packing and 'hit they hay' early.

After dinner we walked them to their theater when we took notice of the line of people walking into The Imperical Theater next door. Billy Elliot, The musical, was playing there and Jay Kuo told us it was a 'must see'. With our spontaneous nature we stood in line in hopes of a major 'what if' possibilty of getting seats. One woman actually offerred us free tickets but they were in the rear mezzanine. Lo and behold...with a bit of patience we were able to get third row center based on a recent cancellation. We really thought we would not see this one until the Springtime.

The 2000 feature film of Billy Elliot directed by Stephen Daldry (who also directed the stage production) was always a favorite film. If you have not seen it add it to your 'must see' list. I am now anxious to see Stephen Daldry's recently directed film called THE READER (I plan to read the book on the plane ride).

Kiril Kulish played the Billy Elliot part on-stage with style. I was so impressed to read that he is an accomplished pianist as well. What a talent! I posted the photo above by a Canadian photographer friend (Edith Kangas) because there was a scene on-stage when Billy pulled a rubiks cube out of his backpack. Ediths' son also seemed like a prospective Billy Elliot (though not sure he can do any ballet dance moves) in the photo. You may view more of Ediths' photography at:
www.redbubble.com/people/throughmyeyes

There was a bit of dialogue during the show that remained with me. Billy's teacher with her snappy British accent said to Billy, "Dance is all about discovering yourself, isn't it?" It struck me as so true. The show got me in the mood to dance. Stephen Hanna of the NYC Ballet was stunning to see as the grown-up Billy Elliot. Ballet dancers really do have the 'best bodies'. I think it is time for me to pull out my NYC BALLET Stretch and Exercise DVD once I return to Los Angeles. It will whip anyone into shape after 6 weeks of doing this DVD. Of course, I hardly look like the ballet dancers but you feel the progess (within 24 hours) after one episode. Many of you know that more Americans gain more weight during the months of October, November and December, so this would make a nice stocking stuffer:

I loved it when Billy sang "Electricity" (take a peek).

The show won me over.

Life Is A Cabaret Ole Chum

Posted on 07:55 by Unknown
Cabaret: noun-a spot that is open late at night and that provides entertainment (as singers or dancers) as well as dancing and food and drink

Oh...what a night! I saw Liza's At The Palace starring Liza Minnelli on-Broadway last night, December 9th. Ron Lewis, the director and choreographer was in the first row. We had unbelievable center orchestra seats. Candice Bergen was seated behind me. Denise Rich was one row to the side. Our friend, Ron de Salvo, was there with his ole chum, Tommy Tune (the recipient of 9 Tony Awards, more than anyone else). Who knows who else was there that I did not recognize. I saw the actors Jane Krakowski and Don Amendolia.

Liza was in top form as she aligned her music with a tribute to Kay Thompson, her Godmother, mentor and well-known MGM creative consultant and performer. She cracked a few jokes about how she used to sing a lot of songs about falling in love but now sings about falling 'out of love' which led to her singing "If You Hadn't, But You Did".

I liked when she sang CABARET. I felt a tad guilty since I have yet to see that 1972 film where she won an Academy Award for her legendary performance. I did see CABARET on Broadway twice (once with Alan Cumming starring and once with Brooke Shields starring), so that accounts for something.

When Liza sang the Al Jolson classic "Mammy" every audience member could visualize her mother, Judy Garland, looking down with happiness. It was especially touching when Liza told of a story about her Godmother, Kay Thompson. Kay had introduced her to three closet doors and asked Liza to open each one. The first door had wallpaper surrounded with views of Rio de Janiero, Brazil, a beautiful, awe-inspiring sight to be seen. The second door had an amazing view of the Champs-Elysees leading to the Eiffel Tower, one of Liza's most favorite places on earth.
"Okay, now look at the last door that is my most favorite on earth," Kay said.
Liza opened closet door number three and there was a mirror. For the first time, Liza disclosed that she saw the wonder of herself.

After the show our friend, Ron de Salvo, arranged a late night supper at the popular Hell's Kitchen restaurant ORSO at 322 W. 46th Street. The supper group included me, Alan Freiman, Ron de Salvo, Tommy Tune, Don Amendolia and Todd Anthony. As we walked into the restaurant Tommy was greeted by Lauren Bacall (known as Bette to her dearest friends). She was seated at the next table. Would it ever end? What a wild theater outing. It was perfect for Alan and I since we would be leaving NYC in two days. It was an ideal way to close our chapter on this electric city (until we return in March 2009).

During supper we talked more about the fabulous energy of Liza. She was on-stage, sober, older and pleasantly full of pizzaz. I just joined the Official Tommy Tune fan club, too (www.tommytune.com). Tommy shared some scoop about his Broadway Theater production (1982-1984) "NINE" that is being directed by Rob Marshall into a feature film next year (2009) with an extraordinary cast. Javier Bardem was tapped and set for the lead role. After he won his Supporting Actor Oscar things had changed; whereby, Daniel Day Lewis got the part. The cast seems unbelievable and I will be first in line to see this one:
www.imdb.com/title/tt0875034/
The comaraderie continued outside the restaurant when we bumped into one of the sidekick Andy Williams' brothers, Jim Caruso, who was one of the dancer, singer performers on-stage with Liza. Jim was on his way to Bar Centrale to meet a friend. We gave Jim is well-deserved "kudos". We all bid farewell at the corner of 8th Avenue and 46th Street.

During the subway ride home I recalled these words from Liza while on-stage,
"You are my family."
I could still faintly hear Liza singing in my mind...
"New York New York"...

Start spreading the news,
I'm leaving today.
I want to be a part of it, New York, New York.
These vagabond shoes,
Are longing to stray,
And make a brand new start of it
New York, New York
I want to wake up in the city that doesn't sleep,
To find I'm king of the hill, top of the heap.
These little town blues,
Are melting away.
I'll make a brand new start of it,
In old New York.
If I can make it there,
I'll make it anywhere,
It's up to you, New York, New York.

New York, New York.
I want to wake up, in the city that doesn't sleep
To find I'm king of the hill, top of the heap
Creme of the crop and the top of the heap.
My little town blues
Are melting away
I'll make a brand new start of it,
In old New York.
If I can make it there,
I'll make it anywhere,
Come on, Come though, New York, New York.

Strangers May Cheer You Up

Posted on 15:06 by Unknown
I remember working in the Financial District of San Francisco in the late 1980s. I was stopped at a stoplight and a strange woman approached me and said, "I hope this isn't being too forward, but I have to tell you that you look just fantastic in that suit." Okay...it may not have been those exact words but it was somewhat along those lines. It made me feel so happy for the rest of the day. I guess it made me happy for years and years (for that matter) because I still remember the moment. To this day, when a stranger gives me a random complement it does seem to mean more.

On Friday there was an article in the New York Times about the Christakis-Fowler study. This team of physician and social scientist at Harvard Medical school had previously published studies that concluded that obesity and quitting smoking are socially contagious. The new study in the Times on Friday concluded that 'Strangers may cheer you up'.

"There's a kind of an emotional quiet riot that occurs and takes on a life of its own, that people are unaware of," said Dr. Nicholas A. Christakis.

The article continued to report that a next-door neighbor's joy increased one's chance of being happy by 34 percent. This neighbor has to be seen regularly and be in physical and temporal proximity. The researchers found that Happiness has a shelf life. I thought that was funny given my recent blog entry about Happiness.
Social contacts were less important to happiness than some one's personal circumstances. It was advised that it is better to spread your happiness to people you know (because you will affect others they know and so forth).

Professor Fowler intentionally puts on his favorite song to soothe his mood when he gets home from work. This will make him happy and pass it on to his family (and everyone they know).

In a separate study of 1,700 FACEBOOK profiles. It was discovered that people smiling in their photographs had more FACEBOOK friends and that many of those friends were smiling. This leads me to the stranger I candidly photographed above on a New York City street. I am curious to know what you think? He is reading a book against a wall. Is he happy? Is he wishing someone will stop and say, "I read that book...good one!" Or is he just waiting on the sidelines for a friend. I would love to read a comment from you with your imaginative idea of the stranger pictured above. Or better yet...do you recall a stranger saying something nice that had an impact on you? Tell me if a stranger has ever cheered you up.
