Eric & Tilda

Posted on 07:27 by Unknown
I'm sorry to say you won't find things here quite the way they are in the movies.
There's much less glamor and a lot more drudgery.

-"The Divided Path"
by Nial Kent

What do the actors Eric Bana and Tilda Swinton have in common? Well, both of them participated in the Tribeca Film Festival 2009 in New York City. They both agreed to be part of a filmmaker event series at the local Soho Apple Computer store in April 2009. I was able to attend both events and learned a bit more about each of them (before and after the events). I am a big fan of both Eric and Tilda. They are excellent actors.

Eric Bana is the actor known for his roles in Black Hawk Down, The Hulk, Troy, The Other Boleyn Girl, Munich and Star Trek. He made his directorial debut at the Tribeca Film Festival with ‘Love the Beast’, a documentary that tells the story of Eric Bana’s love affair with ‘The Beast’, his FORD GT Falcon Coupe automobile. I saw Eric on Monday, April 27, 2009 and took these portraits of him.

Eric was born on August 9, 1968 as ‘Eric Banadinovic’ in Melbourne, Australia. As a teen, he watched the Mel Gibson film ‘Mad Max’ (1979), and decided he wanted to become an actor. However, he did not seriously consider acting until 1991 when he was persuaded to try stand-up comedy while working as a barman at Melbourne's Castle Hotel. His Croatian father, Ivan, was a manager for Caterpillar, Inc., and his German-born mother, Eleanor, was a hairdresser. In 1995, Bana began dating Rebecca Gleeson, a publicist. They married in 1997, after Bana proposed to her on a trip to the United States that he won from Cleo Magazine after being named "Bachelor of the Year" in 1996. Bana and Gleeson have two children, a son Klaus (born July 1998), and a daughter Sophia (born April 2001). I detected the soon-to-be 41 year old as one still in touch with his 'child within'. I liked that because he would get so animated when talking about his fascination for this car he has had since he was a teen.

PHOTO: Rebecca Gleeson, Eric's wife
Eric will appear in ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’ based on the book later this year. I read that book so I cannot miss it. I did not bother to see his Tribeca film, ‘Love the Beast’. The preview just did not appeal to me. It is clear that he certainly loves his car (it must stem way back to that Mad Max movie, a favorite film of mine as well).

Tilda Swinton is the Academy-Award winning actress (Michael Clayton) known for other roles like Caravaggio, Orlando, Possible Words, The Deep End, Adaptation, Young Adam, The Chronicles of Narnia and the Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Tilda made an appearance on April 29, 2009 at the Soho Apple Store to discuss her new film ‘Julia’, an independent thriller where she plays a middle-aged alcoholic lurching from one crisis to another until she really ‘blows it’ by kidnapping a millionaire’s grandson.

Tilda was born on November 5, 1960 as “Katherine Mathilda Swinton” in London, England. Her mother, Judith Balfour, was Australian, and her father, Major-General Sir John Swinton, is Scottish. The Swinton family is an ancient Anglo-Scots family that can trace its lineage to the 9th Century. Tilda attended West Heath Girls’ School (the same class as Diana, Princess of Wales). In 1983 she graduated from New Hall (Murray Edwards College) at Cambridge University with a degree in Social and Political Sciences.

Tilda lives in Nairn, in the Highland area of Scotland, with Scottish painter John Byrne. With Byrne she has her twin son and daughter, Xavier and Honor. She travels with her partner/lover Sandro Kopp, a German/New Zealand painter who was born on February 14, 1978 in Heidelberg, Germany. You can ‘do the math’. He is a lot younger than her; whereby, she can also be known as a “cougar”. She has been with Kopp since 2004 and the relationship has Byrne's blessing. John Byrne, a playwright and painter was born on January 6, 1940. In a 2008 interview, Swinton commented on her domestic situation: "It’s the way we have been for nearly four years. I’m very fortunate. It takes some extraordinary men to make a situation like that work.”

I had recently screened the 1986 film Caravaggio that Derek Jarman spent seven years making. Tilda has a small part in the film and it's a bit of a snore (unless you read M, The Man Who Became Caravaggio (like I did). When someone asked a question about her living with Derek for many years she made it clear that she was very emotionally involved with him. Derek Jarman (January 31, 1942 – February 19, 1994) was an English film director, artist and writer who died at the age of 52 of an AIDS –related illness. CLICK on this link to learn more about Derek.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_Jarman
Last summer Tilda Swinton and film critic Mark Cousins held a film festival in the town of Nairn, on Moray Firth, Scotland. The venue was a former ballroom with beanbags for seats; entry was free if you brought cakes. From August 1-9, 2009, the pair is planning a festival just as unique as the prior years. We will not be seeing the last of Tilda Swinton as she is one of the most fantastic British actresses to reckon with.

Well, Cedric Green, a polite black gentleman I know from the RTOC (Residence Telephone Order Center) invited me to the County Fair in Pleasanton for tomorrow. I am hesitant to accept because he said ‘a group of people’ would probably be attending. I did not feel comfortable being with a new crowd that I didn’t really know (other than Cedric). And do I really know Cedric very well? It seems “iffy”.

identical resemblance to British Actor,

After work I went for a bicycle ride and followed that with a bite to eat at mom and dad’s house. I then returned to my pad, feeling restless and unable to get into any further exercise.

I wanted to really talk to Chris Cordellos again. I knew he did not have a phone yet. That girl (Katie) never called me either. Danny was away on his roller-skating escape or vacation or whatever one would call it.

I broke down and decided to go to the skating rink in San Leandro. I thought that maybe Frank Vasconcellos will be there. He could give me my twenty bucks that I loaned him for this traffic school fee. I entered the skating rink on this designated ‘gay night’ and I ran into Leah Cossy (the lesbian from Danville).
“Hello,” Leah said with a smile.
“Hello,” said Brian.
Do I really know that many people here? I don’t even really know Leah or Brian very well. I saw Jim skating around but I didn’t talk to him. I stayed there until about 9:30 to 10:15PM. I don’t even skate! Here I was watching the folks going round and round. I couldn’t hack hangin’ out at the somewhat sleazy joint any longer.

I was in bed by 10:40PM (or thereabouts). I telephoned mom to say ‘good night’. I slept soundly.

What Did You Learn Today?

Posted on 07:04 by Unknown

“They really were birds of completely different feathers, weren’t they?”
-Ira Levin,
‘Rosemary’s Baby’

Last night I enjoyed dinner at a place in Tribeca, New York City called ‘FORGE’. It is becoming a local haunt in the Tribeca area. I recognized our waitress, Miriam, from another restaurant.
"I worked at the 'Union Square Cafe' for five years," she said.
I am so good at recognizing faces. Touche!
http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/forge/
FORGE is a rustic, cozy and a fine place to celebrate my Birthday Month. Tonight was actually Joe Fingerett’s official birthday so he was given all of the limelight. It was an honor to toast him. The dining guests included me, Alan Freiman, Gloria Cohen (Alan’s mother) and Joe Fingerett (Gloria’s beau).

As the dinner went on with discussion on the activities of our busy Friday I came up with a great dinner conversation question.

“What did you learn today?” I asked.

Gloria says, “While at the Whitney Museum I learned that Edward Hopper spent his early years in Paris.”

Alan says, “I learned that I slept so well last night and I think I attribute it to the spices in the satay chicken at the restaurant in DUMBO called RICE.”

Joe says, “I learned that the artist, Edward Hopper, was primitive in-style. He started to use darkness and shadows during his early years in Paris.”

It was my turn.
“I learned or was reminded of the fact that all attorneys love to make themselves sound confusing. They’re good at that. I also learned that this restaurant, FORGE, has the best ‘whole chicken’ for two.”

What did you learn today?

Wednesday

Midnight: I watched ‘Dark Shadows’ and the werewolf storyline is the current happening in Collinwood. I will likely have nightmares now. And to think I have to present that damn speech on Thursday’s meeting, too. I did decide to focus the speech on ‘fact finding’ while conversing (in a positive way) with our customers.

I telephoned mom from work. She was about to depart with John to the hospital to see Ashley. How exciting when I think about my little niece.

I hung out in the lounge at lunchtime. When I telephoned Chris Cordellos he was entertaining company. The company included Leandra and ‘who knows’ who. We did talk briefly.
“I might drive up,” I said with a tone of encouragement, knowing I probably would not take on the drive.
“Well, I may come down,” Chris said.
It sounds like we’ll meet again soon (either way).

While driving I stumbled upon co-worker, Steve Gaster, at a bus stop after work. I was late for my ‘Sperm Bank’ appointment because I chose to be ‘A Good Samaritan’. I had Steve hop into my car and I drove him home to Alameda. Then I had to drive back to North Oakland for my appointment.

When I arrived home for dinner I was happy that my mom chose to take the day off. She was in ‘Grandma’ heaven. I called it “Grandma-itis”. We went to MACY’s together. She helped me choose a birthday gift for my brother, Tony. I couldn’t help buying a couple of shirts, too. It was mom’s treat. I like mom’s who have ‘Grandma-it is”.

While watching DYNASTY, the TV show, I prepared myself for my speech tomorrow. I am ready. Well, my corporate attire is ready. Smiles.

Russian Girls Are A Hot Commodity

Posted on 06:52 by Unknown

"You've got to make a decision and NOT look back.
That's how LIFE goes!"

-a line heard in
'RACING DREAMS'
Best Documentary at the
2009 Tribeca Film Festival

"Russian girls are a hot commodity in this town," said a dear friend recently after she was told about a party we attended at a New York penthouse in the sky.

Alan and I attended a party in New York City of about twenty guests. It was festive fun but the shocking part was the pairing of three Russian girls with three 'very much older' men. There is a large Russian population in Brooklyn. The Russians are mainly concentrated in the community of Brighton Beach (and surrounding communities). Brighton Beach features many Russian businesses. Because of the large Russian community, it has been nicknamed "Little Odessa."

Two of the Russian girls in attendance at this party were only about thirty years old and their "boyfriends" were divorced men in their early 60's. One of the Russian girls was only twenty-one and she was paired off with a man who was at least sixty-five! It wasn't too thrilling to see through my eyes. Who am I to judge?

Our dear New Yorker friend who made the quote above shall remain nameless. However, she said that some of these young, beautiful Russian women won't accept an older man unless he has over 10 to 15 million before they'll even 'look at you'. I recall seeing a documentary sometime ago about Russian Brides being available in various parts of Russia for American men. Look...there's even a website I just found for this sort of thing:
http://www.dating-world.net/
There is a new documentary that has the potential of being made if you ask me. I guess this is still going on. Once you experience the latest 'New York City' party you start to realize what's really going on.

I know many older women who might not frown at having a young Russian male by their side. Who knows? This may be going on as well. The only issue there is that per an article in January 2006, the average life expectancy of a Russian male is now fifty-eight.

Saturday

This morning I was awoken to mom's "clitter-clatter" in the kitchen as she was preparing for the festivities of Sherri's Baby Shower.

I left the house at 8:30AM for Gomes Tire & Auto Service. I was determined to have my car serviced for the oil, lube and filter changes. By 9AM I felt as though I had accomplished something and gave Sue Miller a telephone call. We arranged for another breakfast outing at Ole's Waffle Shop on Park Street. Instead of the 'blueberry waffles' we had cheese omelets. I persuaded Sue on the idea of attending Sherri's Baby Shower.

We went to Chapin's Stationery Store at the South Shore Shopping Center in Alameda where we both bought Mother's Day cards. We proceeded to Woolworth's and Mervyn's in search of baby gifts for the Baby Shower.

I also helped Sue select a Spring Time outfit to wear while at Mervyn's. We went to Sue's apartment to do the gift wrapping. She changed to her Spring Time outfit and looked very "Spring Time" in the pastel colors.

It was 1:50PM and the Baby Shower started at 2PM, so we hit the road to my mom & dad's house. We arrived at 2:05PM just as my first cousins (Mona and Donna Armijo) arrived with their mom, Lela Armijo. It was rather festive. I didn't feel out-of-place being at a Baby Shower because my brothers, Tony and John, were there, too. I always wondered what happened during a Baby Shower.

Sue won the "Name Game". I laughed at the sight of Sue's bewildered and puzzled look on her face at the fact that she won. It was fun seeing everyone.

By 6PM I was off and running again. This time I went with Sue and her mom (Suzanne) and siblings (Michael Miller and Renee Miller) to the Pleasanton Hotel. We were there in celebration of Michael Miller's birthday (which was actually on May 3rd). We all had a great time at this Pleasanton Hotel.

PHOTO: Sue Miller and her brother, Michael Miller at my 'mom & dad's' house in Alameda, CA

After dinner we all went to Renee's pad in Livermore, California. We hung out there listening to mellow tunes like a 'Peaceful Easy Feeling' by The Eagles.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1JPVIIhGDc
Renee had a really nice pad. We looked at photographs and took pictures, too. We talked about the past, present and future. Renee is actually getting married and may be moving to the State of Washington with her new husband. I guess she's made her decision and has decided to NOT look back.

By 11:30PM we (Sue, Sue's mom, Michael Miller and I) all left for Alameda. I was home by 12:30PM. I browsed through my MACY's catalog and went to bed tossing and turning. I was wondering how Chris Cordellos was moving along with his so-called Saturday Night Party in Arcata.

What Is A Lush Life?

Posted on 10:51 by Unknown

"It's possible to express new ideas using old forms."
-Ludwig Van Beethoven
as heard in the Broadway play
"33 Variations"

I recently returned to New York City and the signs of recession seem absent in the area of Tribeca. There were many people coming, going and shopping on a Thursday Spring Time afternoon. Alan Freiman and I stopped for soup at the local Bouley Bakery Cafe. I was amused by a solitary woman in one corner of the cafe. She was reading a book called 'Lush Life'. The secret is not out as to where I get some of my random book selection ideas. I become intrigued when I see the expression of people's faces as they are reading.

This 'Lush Life' is a novel by Richard Price. From the information I have gathered the story takes place in Manhattan's Lower East side and explores the repercussions of a random shooting of a bartender. The ended is supposed to be expected, yet shocking. The author supposedly digs deep into his characters with perfect dialogue and details. It's an urban crime fiction novel.

From the look of the girl I saw at the Bouley Cafe & Bakery I expected a different sort of 'Lush Life' story. The word lush is characterized by extravagance and of being extremely abundant. I believe one could come up with a new, sparkling novel that really delves into a 'Lush Life'. Still...I will give the Richard Price novel a chance and add it to my Amazon.com 'Wish List'.

I would imagine the life of Ludwig Van Beethoven to be lush. Listen to this excerpt from a most favorite film of mine, Immortal Beloved, to see and feel for yourself:

Thursday

Today was a good day. I got paid a NET check of $598. I ate at the Pot Belli Deli and enjoyed a citrus wine cooler to cap off the rest of the afternoon.

I telephoned Chris while simultaneously the song "Hold Me Now" by the Thompson Twins was playing at the Pot Belli Deli and at his house. It is 'Deja Vu' a lot of times when things really click with us.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpZ9gEKBoYI
Chris went on to tell me he was laying out in the sun and that Jim Severn and another fellow were there for lunch. I decided to let him go to enjoy his free time.

Helen invited me to dinner tomorrow night. She plans to make me a lemon meringue pie, too. It's my favorite! WOW! She's too sweet.

At around 9PM Chris Cordellos telephoned me to say that his doctor found a slight 'inner lump' in his crotch area. It does not sound too good, but he is sure that it's nothing serious.

We are looking forward to Memorial Day Weekend and the last weekend of August when we plan to visit Huntington Beach in Southern California. We surely have more good times ahead.
"I talked to my old chums Lyle, Tim and Elliot today," Chris said, "but you're my best friend."
He is my best friend. When I think of George Jones now I realize what a jerk he really was to me. I find Chris to be a one special chum. When the telephone rang tonight I thought silently to myself that it would hopefully be Chris. When I answered the telephone to hear is voice it was all the more exciting.

My bicycle ride was tough riding West as the wind was against me. I managed and the resistance was well worth the effort.

I watched Joan Rivers host The Tonight Show tonight. Loretta Lynn was a guest, singing "Always On My Mind". It made me think of Chris and how we are always on each others' mind.

Whatever Works

Posted on 13:03 by Unknown
"Art is:
Working on something
til you like it--
then, leaving it THAT WAY."

-as written on an old
T-shirt I've owned for
several years.

You will be hearing the term "Whatever Works" a little more than usual in the coming months thanks to our world renown filmmaker, Woody Allen. I am sure the term is being used on a regular basis at economic team meetings in Washington DC these days. "Whatever Works!"

Woody has this new film in store for us that will premiere as the opening night film (April 22, 2009) at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. It looks like a doozy, too.

“Whatever Works" revolves around an eccentric man (Larry David) taken into a series of adventures and encounters with his friends from Greenwich, a young woman from the South (Evan Rachel Wood), and her parents. The movie was filmed entirely in New York City. It will be released in NY and LA on June 19, 2009.

I heard a song at the end of a 'not so great' film recently written and directed by John Maybury that explored a bit of painter Francis Bacon's life. The song was something I wanted to seek out. I finally did that today. I discovered a three-minute 1931 silent screen film clip by the Ray Noble Orchestra sung by Al Bowlly. It's a special mood setter. I love the lyrics. Listen. I believe Woody Allen would love this music for "Whatever Works".

Time On My Hands Lyrics

Time on my hands, you in my arms
Nothing but love in view
Then if you fall, once and for all
I'll see my dreams come true.

Moments to spare
With someone you care for
One love affair for two
And so with time on my hands
And you in my arms
And love in my heart all for you

Moments to spare
With someone you care for
One love affair for two
And so with time on my hands
And you in my arms
And love in my heart all for you

Twenty-five years ago today:

March 13, 1984, Tuesday

It was raining so very hard this morning. The weather was making me wonder if I should attend my ART class or not.

I gave Steve Gaster a lift to his sisters' pad in Alameda after our work shift ended. Steve is a really nice guy. I like him despite his fascination for bowling and poker--of which I am not really "in" to.

I enjoyed a steak and salad with Dad. I ended up coming to my pad to nap for a while. I did attend my ART class after all. I am really glad I made it to the class tonight. I received my printing for my 'imaginary company'. I called it "Cordellos Clothiers". I wonder if my finished and polished product with impress Chris Cordellos.

After ART class (10pm) I decided to drive over to the White Horse Tavern Inn on Telegraph in North Oakland. I drove by my old intern pal, Howard Edelstein's house (who lives in the Claremont district). I saw his car parked outside. While inside the 'gay' tavern I ordered a 'vodka grape' and saw a tall, husky semi-Billy Idol lookalike. I stood around watching some of the pool hustlers (keeping in mind that they weren't actually hustling--just guys playing pool). There was one guy I noticed straightaway. I recognized him as the waiter, John, who works at the Santa Fe Bar & Grill on University Avenue in Berkeley. He is blond and a 'seemingly' nice guy. Then unbeknownst to me as I was making small talk with John when someone nudged me. It was none other than Howard Edelstein!

And to think one year ago at this time we were in Mexico together. It's as if life is a recurring cycle; whereby, things, events and people do tend to suddenly and unexpectedly re-enter our lives. Reliving events of the past are easy depending on the individual. The question is what will happen now? What does Howard really want? And what will Howard do?

Howard and I ended up catching up on a few things.
"Yeah, I was back to Mexico for the last four months," Howard claimed, "I was planning to call you tomorrow."
Why did I find this very hard to believe? It was clearly 'bullshit'.
"I'm so happy to see you," Howard said.
I tried hard to be believable and acted happy about our reunion.

I couldn't help having flashbacks of Guadalajara and how he met two young Mexican guys in the large mercado plaza. We became friendly and went to their place. I stayed in the living room with one of them, trying to understand as I used my lackluster Spanish skills. Howard was in the other room having sex with the other guy. Outrageous! How did he think that made me feel. I was so glad I left with that 'Alioto' guy on his jeep to Mazatlan the next day for a 'Spring Break' experience. I didn't even say good-bye to Howard. Did he even wonder what had happened to me? What a jerk!

"Why don't you come over to my house for some cheesecake?" Howard asked.
I obliged. How could I turn down a free slice of cheesecake?
While I was at his house I noticed a book called "Lust For Life" about Vincent Van Gogh. He could tell I had a fascination with it.
"Go ahead, I'll loan it to you," Howard said.
"Thanks!"
"If you want you can stay the night and sleep downstairs," Howard suggested.
There was nothin' doin'--I left!

I did also give, John, the guy by the pool tables that I recognized my card with my home telephone number.
"Call me and we can go out sometime," I said.
"Thanks!"
The reason I gave him my card was because he took the initiative to come over to me in the beginning.
John shook my hand and said, "Enchante", a word he surely learned waiting tables.
Was he really 'enchanted' to have met me? Time will tell. I wonder if he'll ever call me. It made me think of what Chris Cordellos said about that gal from Santa Rosa that I'd met at the I-Beam.
"If she doesn't call you, she's crazy!"
I'd say that line goes for John, too.

Blue Velvet

Posted on 11:45 by Unknown
I was in the middle of my gym workout yesterday and I thought of a song that I love called "Blue Velvet", so I wanted to share the tune today. I always recall the imagery of Isabella Rossellini singing it in the 1986 film of the same name (Blue Velvet).
www.youtube.com/watch?v=IATxcQ4qebg

I met Isabella Rosellini on May 7, 2006 at the Tribeca Film Festival. She was promoting the works of her father, the Italian director Roberto Rosellini. She didn't look as glamorous but I loved meeting Isabella as her normal everyday self.
www.fotolog.com/michaelarm/24430240
I mean she is the daughter of Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman...after all! I saw Isabella another time in New York City about a year ago. She was alone on 42nd Street and no one recognized her. I adored that she could go out and just be a 'regular person' on the streets of New York. She went inside a theater to buy a solo ticket to see the Broadway production of "Mary Poppins".

The photo illustration above was taken at night during a walk in New York City. The lighting was perfect and I accented the BLUE. I spotted it within a display window on the night of October 29, 2008 and it makes me think of the Blue Velvet song.

BLUE VELVET (lyrics)

She wore blue velvet
Bluer than velvet was the night
Softer than satin was the light
From the stars
She wore blue velvet
Bluer than velvet were her eyes
Warmer than May her tender sighs
Love was ours
Ours a love I held tightly
Feeling the rapture grow
Like a flame burning brightly
But when she left, gone was the glow of
Blue velvet
But in my heart there'll always be
Precious and warm, a memory
Through the years
And I still can see blue velvet
Through my tears

January 10, 1984

Gilbert called me at my office. He asked me to come over to 'Image Photo Lab' in San Francisco to observe the photo shooting of Natasha by Kevin Ward, the photographer. I decided to go for the heck of it.

When I arrived at the 'Image Photo Lab' I saw Olga, Kevin, Natasha, Gilbert and a strange gay looking make-up artist. It was an interesting observation to see them getting prepared. It took such a long time before they finally started taking the pictures.
"It's good for you to see what it's like during a photoshoot," Gilbert said.
I was bemused. My thoughts drifted into questions of where I stand among all of this modeling mess. Where and when it will start and/or end? Will there be pictures taken of me? What is Gilbert's game plan?

After the photoshoot I dropped the make-up artist at Bush & Steiner. Then I dropped off Natasha at Gilbert's apartment. Was I simply the chauffer for the day? I found a parking space and Gilbert and I went to some coffee shop on Polk Street (next door to Fish & Chips). We talked as he showed me some muscle men pictures that he had in a notebook. He also read aloud some personal letters that he had received. The letters were mainly about him and his goodness as a person. The letters seemed to be intimate words from other men that he had--or almost had--intimate relations with. Who knows (in this modeling business) who sleeps with who and for what (is what I was thinking). After this strange ending of his shared letters we ended our conversation. He was still acting very in awe of me. We walked to my parked car and I drove off after we said goodbye. It was good to be back home.

I changed my clothes, freshened up and drove out to San Leandro to the skating rink. I arrived at 10:30pm and I saw George Jones. We talked for a while...but it was brief. Then I saw Jim and we talked for a while...but it was brief. Then I saw Bill Helbush and he expected a bit more from me (like a kiss...I think). I backed away with a flat out "No". My reaction burned him the wrong way. I seemed to hurt him but I think he wanted to make it appear to others in and around the rink that we were "together". He simply walked away. I also spoke to Bryan and Frank. I realized what a dump the place was and I decided to scram. By 11:45pm I was back home, safely in bed. I was thinking and wondering what is in store for 1984. There are no intimate or loving moments yet. I don't intend on diving into a relationship unless I feel it is truly significant.
