Inspired by Julia

“You are the butter to my bread and the breath to my LIFE.”
-as heard while watching
The 2009 film “Julie & Julia”

Photo taken May 21, 2009

Have you seen the “Julie & Julia” movie with Meryl Streep and Amy Adams yet? I would highly recommend it if you like food. It’s not a 5 STAR film. I think I would give it 4 STARS though. I love how the Julie character keeps a daily blog (like me).
I identified when actress, Amy Adams, as Julie said, “I can’t help but wonder is there anyone out there reading me?”

Meryl Streep will surely get another Academy Award nomination for her role as Julia Child. She was downright magnificent! Many friends I have spoken to want to see a film just about ‘Julia Child’ with Meryl Streep reprising the role. Maybe someone can write a new script because it’s a sure fire winner idea (I think).

I loved when Meryl Streep, as Julia said, “You can never have too much butter.” That line made me laugh.

Now ‘Alan and I’ are toying with the idea of moving to Paris for a 3 or 4 month adventure of learning French and Gourmet Cooking. We will have to see if we can work it out. I think I want to experience a bit of Paris by actually ‘living there’ (like Julia Child did).

The only thing that left me puzzled at the end was when I kept asking myself, “What is marshmallow fluff?” Go treat yourself to a screening of it. That's just another line that made me laugh.

Friday

At lunchtime, Barbara Reynolds and I got food at the Crocker Galleria and ate outside near Market Street (in front of the Foremost-McKesson building).
At 2PM our training crew went to 633 Folsom for a UNITED WAY lecture (Yawn).

Then we all just ‘hung out’ in the actual business office, observing the happenings.

David Vigil was showing off pictures of him with Brooke Shields. I love her (Brooke).

Once I was released from work I ‘once again’ saw Linda Nannizzi at the BART station. I gave her a ride home to Alameda from the Fruitvale Station. Tonight is our date!

I went over to Mom’s to get some mail that I had there. When I got to my pad I was excitedly getting ready for my date. I underdressed. She wore a black dress with black heels. She looked nice. Oh well, I got my leather jacket from Spain today. Just wait until Chris Cordellos sees it.

When I went to pick up Linda I met her Dad briefly. I think he kind of liked me.
Linda and I ate at Horatio’s and then came to my house to talk as we looked at Alameda High School yearbooks. We pointed out mutual people that we knew. Then we took a walk to visit Sherri Armijo and my niece, Ashley, but they were not at home.

By midnight, Linda and I were at the Southland Cinemas in Hayward watching ‘Dreamscape’, an excellent film starring Dennis Quaid, Kate Capshaw and Max Von Sydow.

I drove Linda home after a very nice evening and ended the night by giving her a few kisses goodnight. I realized that by bringing her home at about 2AM her Dad probably is NOT going to like me after all. Ouch! Who knows? We had fun and she likes me (I hope). I think so.

I ‘dreamscaped’ Linda Nannizzi all over the sheets.

Mr. Miller & the Chicago Connections

Posted on 07:11 by Unknown
"Naturally, with a very advanced mind you find things wrong with a lot of things a lot of the time."
-Woody Allen
in his film
"Whatever Works"

While in PARIS, France on May 23, 2009, Alan became ‘Mr. Miller’ for a few hours. We asked our concierge about a great place for seafood and the ‘Brasserie Bofinger’ was highly recommended. There were no available tables but a guest in the Hotel had to unexpectedly shorten his trip and he (Mr. Miller) had a reservation. So, Alan posed as ‘Mr. Miller’ on this evening (and we used the reservation under his name). Does Alan really look like a ‘Mr. Miller’?

When we arrived at the restaurant at 7PM at 5 et 7, Rue de la Bastille, 75004 we were seated next to Steve Flanigan and his wife, B.P., from Chicago, Illinois. The pate/fois gras that Alan and I shared was fabulous (not to mention the escargots). My salmon with flaky crust satisfied my tummy, too.

The Chicago couple were such nice company. We had a fun chat about ‘corkage fees’. Steve is a chef of a restaurant in a historic Chicago building. The restaurant he is affiliated with is known as The Gage:
http://www.thegagechicago.com/
It's on our 'must visit' list.

Now we have another reason to visit Chicago (The Flanigan's). Our friend and Hotel Manager guru (Alberto) lives in a Chicago suburb now; my photographer pal (Arlene) is in Skokie, IL; Alan’s cousin (Leslie, husband & son) lives in Peoria, IL. And another good reason to visit is that because I have only been to the O’Hare Airport between flights (never left the Airport). I really have no idea what Chicago is all about.

Twenty-five years ago today:

July 21, 1984
Saturday

I woke up on this Saturday morning and started to wash clothes. I was writing in my journal when the telephone rang at 8AM. It was a surprise to hear Chris Cordellos’ voice.
“I am writing in my journal,” I said after he asked what I was doing.
“Oh, I thought maybe you were seeing someone else because every time I call there is no answer.”

I made a deal to call him back at ‘Dan and Joetta’s’ in an hour at 707-442-1973. He could only talk for a minute because he was at a public pay phone.

Tonight I want to see a futuristic movie called ‘Kamikaze 89’ or see a band playing in The City called ‘The Translator’. Chris was going to drive down but his lower back is acting up (which means he may not). He is quite bummed out and he misses it here.

Tomorrow the Golden Gate Branch Business Office picnic takes place. I want to go, so it is best that Chris does not show up. I just hate the fact that he is up there in Humboldt County snortin’ jointin’ or whatever with all of those other semi-losers that he associates with in the US Coast Guard.

When I telephoned Chris he was not in too high of spirits. I guess I made myself sound like I was having too much of a good time these past few days. His jealousy turned into resentment. I really did not feel like listening to his negative, bummed out attitude. Again, he could not really talk but said he would call me back.

I went bicycling and it felt good. It felt so good to have my own self-therapy (with my bike). Everyone should choose some activity (even jump rope) for fun and the release of anxiety.

I stopped by to visit mom for a while. The day was rather muggy. I decided to come back to my pad and take a nap.

The second surprise phone call came from Nici Maurino.
“Were you surprised that I came over last night?” Nici asked.
“Now that you mention it, yes,” I replied.
“Tell me something. Why didn’t you take advantage of me when I was lying there next to you? I was giving it to you on a silver platter,” she said in her own curious way followed by some loud laughter.

Could I really tell her? For one thing, she smelled like sweat and dirty pussy. If she had smelled fresh and like clean puss it might have been a different story. If I wasn’t sleepy or if she was massaging or rubbing aromatic lotions on me (and I her) it might have been a different story. I, as a man, like foreplay as well (long-lasting foreplay). Who wants a ‘wham bam let’s get it on’ kind of scene (unless, of course, I was really ‘hot & horny’…which is often, I’d say).
I laughed and shrugged it off as our conversation ultimately came to an end. It is clear she really did want me to seduce her.

At 3:30PM Bruce called me about going out. I suggested the futuristic movie ‘Kamikaze 89’ in San Francisco. He was all for it.
“I’ll call you around 6:15 when I get out of work,” Bruce said.

I had told Chris that I would probably see the afternoon matinee of that futuristic movie. I ended up being lazy, sleeping and finishing up my laundry. I ate dinner at moms’ house.

Bruce called at 6:30 and we went to The City. I picked him up on Madison in Oakland where he resides with his mother. He really is a nice, harmless guy---but ‘that’s it’ as far as I’m concerned. He is funny. He is not very attractive. I know I’ve heard his laugh somewhere but I can’t seem to place it.

I finally found a parking space near 16th Street. The movie was downright ‘shitty’. It was in German and just plain not very good. After the show we left ‘The City’ and had milkshakes at Jack-in-the Box in Alameda. Then I decided to go to my house where I turned on the TV. It was weird because the TV was ‘on’ but neither of us was really watching it. I could sense that. We talked and he went on about liking my place. He made all sorts of complements over my bicycle (which I keep in my living room). It’s just easier to clean ‘in the house’. He complemented my bed and other items, too.
“You’re a good decorator,” Bruce said.
I got the feeling he was surprised by my pad.

I drove Bruce home at about 1:30AM. It got a little strange when I dropped him off.
“What are you doing next weekend?” Bruce asked as I sat parked in front of his house.
I think I was hoping he’d just hop out of my car and that would be the end of it. That was a strange question. It was as if we had gone out on ‘a date’ or something.
“I don’t know,” I answered with a yawn, making it appear that I was too tired to discuss it.
“I’ll call you,” Bruce said as he unlatched his passenger door.
I don’t know if that’s a plus on my part. He looks so ‘geeky’, but he’s super nice. I can’t be mean.

The Gypsy

Posted on 07:11 by Unknown
"Life is a journey and the road we travel has unexpected twists and turns which sometimes lead us to unexpected places and unexpected people."-as heard while watching
KYLE-XY, Season II

Do you know a gypsy? Have you ever known a gypsy? Have you ever had your fortune told by a gypsy? I have never had my fortune told. Sometimes I wonder what a crystal ball will reveal. I think I want to find out things the 'natural' everyday way.

The only gypsy I have ever 'sort of' known (or remember) is Magda Rikosi, a character role played by actress Grayson Hall, in the TV-soap series DARK SHADOWS. Magda Rakosi was a gypsy who lived at the Old House on the Collinwood estate in 1897. She stole the Hand of Count Petofi from her gypsy tribe, and attempted to use it to cure the werewolf curse she had placed on Quentin Collins.
Magda and her husband, Sandor Rakosi lived at The Old House by special permission of Edith Collins. Magda was obsessed with finding the Collins family jewels and one night, while reading in her crystal ball, she discovered there was a hidden room inside the old Collins Mausoleum. What she did not know was that this vision was sent to her by Barnabas Collins, who had just traveled back in time to 1897 and needed to be freed from his coffin. When Sandor returned with Barnabas, Magda saw the bite marks on Sandor's neck and realized that Barnabas was a vampire.

I also seem to recall that there are known 'gypsies' in current day France that cause a bit of havoc to the French. There is even a BLOG devoted to Gypsy News:
http://www.gypsygirlpress.net/gypsynews/2008_09_01_archive.html

I have recently fallen for an old song called THE GYPSY by The Ink Spots. It was a featured song on the soundtrack in the 2008 film, REVOLUTIONARY ROAD. I like the mood of it and I wanted to feature the tune on my BLOG today. Take a listen:

Monday

It was a great day. I dressed in a white, pressed shirt and tie to the office. I got a few head turns. For lunch, Barbara and I left at 12:30PM or so and ended up in Union Square to see the torch runners relay around the Square. It was fun. We returned to the office at 2:30PM. Ooops. Luckily, no one got on our case about it.

After work I arrived home in a jiffy. Suzy Miller arrived at 6PM and we went bicycling together. Then I biked more ‘on my own’ (after Suzy pooped out). I stopped at mom’s who was babysitting Ashley.

I was home and in bed by 9PM when I woke up to a phone call at 10PM. It was Danny Garcia calling.
“I just wanted to see how you were doing’,” Danny said as I rubbed my eyes to awareness.
“Oh, well I thought you lost interest,” I bluntly said.
“I merely called to see how you were doing is all,” Danny said as we quickly ended our conversation.
What is with him? I guess he just wants to be friends (which is fine). I would just find it to be a rather shaky involvement. I have decided he is okay looking but just NMT (Not My Type).

PHOTO: Karyn Kossoff, 1984

I think I like Karyn Kossoff at the new San Francisco office. Her personality is bubbly. She is a bit on the OW (overweight) side but she has a neat smile. I like it. Patty Reid is nice---but just plain FAT! Hank (at work) is also a temptation. Then again there is an ‘ugh’ about him, too. The preppy fellow in the neighborhood remains a mystery.

The Floating Island

Posted on 00:01 by Unknown
"Isn't it such an odd coincidence that we both don't like crabs, clams or oysters?" I asked Alan during a walk down Lafayette Street in New York City.
"No, it's a prerequisite to being in love," Alan answered.
Laughter followed on this early day in June 2009.

Where Is Puymirol ?

There is a small community in the Southwestern area France known as Puymirol. On May 30, 2009, Alan and I were on an automobile journey from the San Sebastian region of Spain to Puymirol, France. We passed signs for the Bergerac town and the Hotel Cyrano that inspired me to look into the autobiography of the French writer and dramatist, Cyrano de Bergerac.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrano_de_Bergerac

Alan purchased a ‘Flamenco Deep’ CD, so we were feeling the deep sounds of flamenco during the drive into this French town. We stopped to rest at a town called Mont-de-Marsan for a jamon y fromage sandwich and a most delicious “suissesse” (a flat square –shaped pastry with sugar and crème fraiche).
I loved the tune ‘Como un lobo’ by Miguel Bose con Bimba Bose that I heard during our journey. (I love the music video I just found even better. That Bimba Bose is so ‘fashion forward’ with one amazing body to match!)
http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=como+un+lobo&docid=994850046141&mid=F84D8D498BA8E813A2E1F84D8D498BA8E813A2E1&FORM=VIVR5

We arrived at the Michel Trama Relaix & Chateau at approximately 5PM. The multiple course dinner by Michel Trama was unforgettable. A dear friend arranged for a bottle of champagne to be presented to us (for my Birthday) before we started with dinner.
Yes, I took photos of each course.
The menu included:

The presentation of ‘The Floating Island’ dessert was magnificently delicious. The chef, Michel Trama, said, “The floating island dessert is served when ‘you’ve made it.”
I thought the island part was made of marshmallow but he said, “No, whipped egg white.”
“Fantastique!”
If you ever experience a 'Michel Trama' dinner you will have the ultimate gourmet meal.

Wednesday

I woke up at 9AM or so to moms telephone call.

I showered and found Cedric Green’s telephone number.
“Hi Cedric, I’d like to go to the fair if you’re still going,” I said excitedly.

I took my Salvation Army clothes over to my mom’s house because she had arranged for a pick-up. I borrowed twenty bucks from mom and before long it was noon and Cedric Green and Frankie Clark were at my place. Frankie Clark is a sweet black gal who works at the Berkeley RTOC (Residence Telephone Order Center). I had never met her until today.

We left for Pleasanton and found a parking space easily. Our feet were beginning to get tired as the day wore on. It was hot and we were thirsty. Cedric Green is too “cool” though. He makes me laugh. I consider him a good chum and I shall miss friends like him now that I am leaving the Downtown Oakland office. I am so eager for the change of working in San Francisco.

I was home by 7:30PM. It was still daylight on this 4th of July summer day. Mom was babysitting Ashley, so I went over there to see them.
“Mike Miller called,” Mom said.
I did not return his call right away. Instead, I chose to hang out with mom and ate a homemade salami sandwich and a Moutain Dew soft drink.

I lounged and watched “The Young & the Restless” and “The Edge of Night”.

By 9:20PM the fireworks could be heard outside. It was ongoing. I headed home for a bath and now I am all relaxed in my black half-shirt pajama wear.

I kept wondering if Chris might have called me today. I began to wonder if Danny had called. I wanted to know if Danny had returned from the Los Angeles area after his venture to Bakersfield (or thereabouts) for the skating events.

I know Mike Miller telephoned. I will have to call him tomorrow and invite him over.

It’s 10:10PM now and I would say it is definitely time for some shut-eye.

The Model

Posted on 07:35 by Unknown
"You have no idea what goes on inside me,
and as far as I know,
you've never even wondered."

-Nial Kent
"The Divided Path"

In the late 1980s I met a model named Dustin Nipper. She was tall, gorgeous and reminded me very much of an actress known as Morgan Brittany.

PHOTO: Morgan Brittany

She was a lot younger than I. She was about eighteen and I was around twenty-eight at the time.
She seemed more mature than the typical eighteen year old; whereby, I thought we made an 'eau de naturale' couple when we went out.

I remember meeting Dustin's dad (who reminded me of the actor, Perry King).

PHOTO: Perry King

She lived with her mother in Pleasanton, CA as her folks were divorced. Her mother was quite nice and attractive as well but it was a little bit uncomfortable going into Dustin’s bedroom and playing “kissy kissy”. It is still an unforgettable memory for me (and probably for her). They were 'great' kisses, after all.

When I would hear that classic tune by KRAFTWERK called ‘The Model’ I would think of Dustin. I loved pedaling my bike to that tune.
http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=kraftwerk%2C+the+model&docid=653196460434&mid=D593C439FC79F7E58DE8D593C439FC79F7E58DE8&FORM=VIVR

I never continued to see Dustin on a regular basis because I ended up moving to Los Angeles in October 1989 for career reasons. We wrote to one another a few times and our connection simply faded with time.

Fast-forward to the Internet age and Dustin had read some of my book reviews on Amazon.com. She managed to email me and we reconnected after many years. It was fun ‘catching up’ and learning that she was still living in the Northern California Bay Area with her husband.

PHOTO: At 'IL VICOLO' Ristorante,
Paris, France

Alan and I met her and her husband, Amit, in Downtown Napa for lunch one day a year or so ago. Thanks to email and FACEBOOK we keep in touch more regularly.

Coincidentally, we learned that Dustin and her husband, Amit Bhatnagar, were planning a trip to Europe at the same time we were. We managed to arrange a dinner together in PARIS at a place called IL VICOLO (34, Rue Mazarine, 75006, Paris). The Italian wine was just what we all needed after the process of getting settled after the long flight. They had flown in from San Francisco (versus our New York), so they had a few more hours of adjustment challenge.

We ventured on to Spain while they explored Rome, Italy. I know they had as great a time as we did.

Thursday

Well, I have been falling behind with writing in my journal. It is time to play ‘catch up’. Let’s see if I can recall all the way back to Thursday (as it is Sunday now). I am lying out on the Alameda South Shore Beach right now, feeling the good sun and listening to tunes.

I know I went to work on Thursday, June 14th. I believe Helen Wong brought lunch and we ate at the cafeteria with Cedric Green.

After work I rode my bike, too, of course. I remember dropping by to give Sherri some mail that she received at the Cook Lane townhouse address. It was mail about a Baby Pageant. I guess Ashley is going to be in her first Baby Beauty Pageant. Sherri gave me some tickets to sell (at my office) for votes for Ashley (for The Baby Pageant 1984, Queen of Diablo Valley).
“I will try and sell the whole book for you,” I said excitedly.

I received a package from International Male (my black night shirt, Moroccan madras shorts and underwear arrived).

Once home I was rather bummed out. I guess with Chris away I did not really want to go out ‘on my own’. So, I turned in early on a Thursday night.

A Fun-Filled Day With Frederic

Posted on 07:35 by Unknown
"Every experience shapes us
to who we will become."

-as heard while watching
the TV series, KYLE-XY, Season I
If you have been following my blog you may recall the framed collage gift that I sent to Paris, France to the L'Osteria Ristorante. I was so happy to see it hanging in the Ristorante on May 21st when I peeked into the window (the Ristorante was closed at the time). I had arranged a lunch with Frederic Deltour on May 22, 2009 at this same Ristorante. I was hoping he would show up. Who could be certain that he would?

When Alan and I were in Paris in December 2006 we saw Paloma, her husband, Alexandre, and their son, Jonathan. I tried to see Frederic but he was out of town at this time.

In July 2008 we found ourselves in Paris once again but I neglected to notify Frederic until the last minute. He read my email 'too late' and we had already come and gone.

This time it all worked out. We were to meet at 1 o'clock. Alan went inside the restaurant to see if he was inside. I remained outside as 'lookout' on the Rue de Sevigne. As I turned around I recognized Frederic straightaway. I smiled and he smiled back handsomely. It was as if we'd been 'old chums' who simply had not seen each other in a few years. The reality was that it was our first meeting. I hugged him 'hello'. Alan did the same and we entered the most fantastic Italian eatery we know in Paris.

I pointed out my framed Art collage that was now hanging inside the place. Frederic shared a lot of interesting facts about himself. He is involved with a business now but has a passion for MEDITATION. He hopes to create an annual MEDITATION trip/hike in the South of France and other global locations. I hope to participate as 'meditation' is something I strive to incorporate more into my life. In my opinion 'meditation' is all about being PEACEFUL with body, mind and spirit (and letting it shine and pass on to those around you).

Frederic's smile would thrill any one. He does possess a magic. He's a pleasure seeker. Yes, I am, too.
"What are your plans today?" Frederic asked.
"We were just going to walk Paris and maybe go to the Gallerie Lafayette food court. We like to be spontaneous," Alan replied.
"Yeah, we like to travel spontaneously," I remarked.
"You're welcome to go with us if you don't have any plans," Alan mentioned politely.
"Sure. I like that 'not planned' way of travel," Frederic said.

PHOTO: Michael J Armijo, Frederic Deltour, Alan Freiman
Outside the L'Osteria Ristorante, Paris, France

Frederic plans to take a trek this summer with his girlfriend to Spain. I learned more about his feelings on meditation and dealing with stress. I stressed the importance of 'balance' in one's life. Frederic's positive energy made us feel at ease in his company. He spent the day walking with us all over Paris. We even got lost for a few minutes. It's fun getting lost in Paris (as long as you eventually find your way).

I look forward to a future journey on one of Frederic's meditation excursions. If you're interested in participating on a meditation/hiking adventure, please leave a comment on this BLOG and I will provide details as they come available.

June 12, 1984, Tuesday

Hoorah! Accomplishment! I am starting my handwritten Journal #5 today. I am proud of myself for having begun all of these stories and 'eventual future memoirs'. I will be even more glad of it during my retirement days. I am sure. What will I have remembered and what refreshed memories will return?

I went for my typical bicycle ride this evening until 7PM. It was a good, "meditational" ride. I wondered if Chris was wondering if I was riding while he was riding. Now that his car is parked here he rides his bike to and from the military base. It is very difficult for him, considering the mountaineering type of bike that he has to use. It's no SCHWINN 12-speed Le Tour bike like mine.

"I can't come down on Thursday like I thought because I have to work on Friday," Chris said sadly.
"Ahh, too bad," I said as I took a bite out of an apple.
"I thought I was going to be free on Wednesday but there was a mishap at work. I will probably come next week though," Chris said with a reassuring tone.

It is all 'just as well'. By the time Chris does return for a visit I will be all situated and back in my Solomon Lane townhouse. I went to bed early: at 'nine-ish'.

A Gift To France

Posted on 01:15 by Unknown
“I did it MY WAY.”
–Frank Sinatra

L’Osteria in PARIS is a most magnificent ‘hole in the wall’ restaurant with the finest Italian cuisine. I must talk about this fantastic place today. It is located at 10, Rue de Sevigne in the 4th Arrondissement. The decor is simple but it has a series of varied 8 x 10 framed art images on the wall that I admired.

I have visited L’Osteria twice on my last two visits to PARIS. I highly recommend it as a regular stop if you ever find yourself there. Simply take the METRO to St. Paul (Line 1). I will be in PARIS again in late May 2009 and I plan to stop in for ‘at least’ lunch. The pasta alone is worth the visit with the house wine and a bit of fresh bread.

You may recall that the ‘Statue of Liberty’ was a gift from France to America in 1886. Well, I decided to send a gift to this favorite restaurant in France (L’OSTERIA)—even if it is an Italian restaurant. Smiles. A month or so ago I created a collage of images (illustrated above). I framed it and sent it to the attention of the propietor of the L’OSTERIA Ristorante as ‘My Gift to France’. I am hoping I will see it on their wall when I re-visit Paris in late May 2009. What do you think? Will I see it on the wall?

Saturday

I woke mom at 8:15am or so and started my Saturday morning bowl of Wheaties cereal when Suzy Miller called. She was inviting me to join her at Ole’s Waffle Shop for breakfast. How could I refuse?

We both ordered the delicious ‘blueberry waffle’. Afterwards, we decided to go biking together along the beach and 'in and around' Bay Farm Island. I actually bumped into my first cousin, Joey Armijo, in Alameda. That was an out-of-the-blue sighting.

Suzy and I continued our bike journey with a visit to my mom’s house. Suzy retired by 1:30pm and I continued riding until 3pm. I napped from 4pm to 5pm. When I woke up I called Suzy to see about arranging an outing for a movie or something. We both were curious about “Moscow on the Hudson”. It looked like it could be a good one. We were goin’ out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1jX0tbL0e4
Sue and I had to settle for a seat up in the third row of the Southland Cinemas in Hayward, CA. “Moscow on the Hudson” was pretty good. It wasn’t as enjoyable as my recent viewings of “Romancing The Stone” or “Against All Odds”. “Romancing The Stone” seemed to have the better story while “Against All Odds” had the scenic escapes and pretty faces.

Sue and I ate at The Lyon’s Restaurant after the show. It’s the only place that’s conveniently opened around there. I drove her home and gave her a quick peck on the lips. It was early when I arrived home (around eleven o’clock) and mom and dad were about to watch some Biblical epic film called ‘Jesus of Nazareth’. I wasn’t in the mood for it, so I went to sleep. I was thinking about the events of the day. I was wishing for more. And I was wondering what would be next as I entered a dream.

Do Your Surname Search!

Posted on 14:38 by Unknown

"The world is in perpetual motion, and we must invent the things of tomorrow."
-Tilar J Mazzeo,
The Widow Clicquot

Leave it to my 'DNA' cousin, John E Spencer to introduce me to another magnificent website that is available. It's called the 'World Names Profiler'. Simply go to this website link and type in your surname in the SEARCH box.
http://www.publicprofiler.org/worldnames/

I entered ARMIJO and learned the 'Frequency Per Million' of people with my surname in our world. I wasn't surprised that SPAIN was my 'power' country (which is why I will be there for my '5 decades' birthday this year). Look at where my other ARMIJO descendants are scattered.

SPAIN.............20.53
USA...............10.28
ARGENTINA......... 3.58
NEW ZEALAND....... 1.06
SWITZERLAND....... .64
NORWAY............ .57
FRANCE............ .44
CANADA............ .23
GERMANY........... .11
ITALY............. .06

This helps in my personal travel plans. I have yet to visit New Zealand, Norway, and Canada. I shall add them to my list. Smiles.

I did a search under my mom's maiden name (LUCERO) and my paternal grandmothers' maiden name (GARCIA) and my maternal grandmothers' maiden name (LEYBA) and learned that SPAIN, ARGENTINA and the USA are currently my most populated places of ancestral heritage. Where do you stand? I would love to know your family roots!

LUCERO:
ARGENTINA....1641.99
USA.......... 49.43
SPAIN........ 31.64
NORWAY....... 4.24
AUSTRIA...... 1.59

LEYBA (a Spanish Jewish surname):

Twenty-five years ago today:

Monday, March 26, 1984

It was another 'okay' work day. Salima has a temporary promotion beginning next week in the El Cerrito 'Final Accounts Collection Center'. I will miss her. I already miss Juanita Lane who is on promotional assignment somewhere in Hayward, CA. My promotion will come one of these days. I'm in no real rush.

Helen and I ate at the 'Pot Belli Deli'. I think Helen has one hell of a humongous crush on my brother, Tony. Whatever!

I rode my bike repeatedly along the South Shore beach. It was a cool, breezy day. The tunes were good as I rode swiftly in my new Campagnolo T-shirt and gloves. I felt as if I was promoting the Italian 'Tour De France' cyclists.

After my ride I went to eat with Dad. He started to yell at me because I was late for dinner. I left quickly thereafter. Shit. I don't have to eat there (and didn't). I split.

Sherri called me and we talked about the bird (Madison) that John bought. She taught me how to feed it since John was away on his ski trip. He is due back on Wednesday.

I drove my car to NATIONS Burgers on Webster Street for a burger, fries and shake (and a slice of cheesecake). There goes any calories I may have lost during the strenuous bicycle ride.

I had felt sleepy when I awoke this morning, so I felt like turning in early tonight. I watched 'Automan', a new TV series starring Desi Arnaz Jr. about a computerized man-made Automatic man. It was so-so.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOYRbfSG55o
"Only When I Laugh" is on TV but I am not in the mood for a flick.

There are only four more days and I shall be on that flight from San Francisco. I look forward to escaping for a while.

Nadine never called me. I am sure she received my card/note that I left on her front door by now. Oh well...it's her loss.

I have been considering a visit to the skating rink in San Leandro this coming Tuesday for 'gay' night. I am not sure whether I should go or not. Sometimes I hate the "vibes". Maybe I will go.

I don't feel like attending that drab class at the California College of Arts & Crafts anymore. I intend to ride my bike every day after work this week. This is for sure!

I like the way my mom straightened up the townhouse. She is too sweet.

Dad called me back with his own way of apologizing. He made me laugh. There's a SAFEWAY Bingo game going on.
"I'll let you win eighty-percent of the SAFEWAY Bingo winnings if you get the winning number to clinch it," Dad said.
He is so 'cool' sometimes. It's too bad he spends his vacation at home. He deserves to get away. I think he is missing out because he always talks about going to Mora Valley or Taos in New Mexico.

I love being part of the 'jet set'. My flight to Arcata-Eureka this Friday night will be fun. I know it!

I am really flattered that Patty Paisal does want to go out with me. She is super nice. I was kind of tempted to ask Nici Kapellas out when I saw her at Elisa's party. I didn't. I keep flashing back to our short 8th grade romance. Haha.

David Vigil yelled out to me across the entire office about partying out by Fisherman's Wharf tonight. I cannot see going to San Francisco every night. Once to twice a month is more than satisfactory.

My recent bike ride in The City was fun despite the whistles, head turns and car honks by other men in the wild, crazy City.

Sherri is moving into this townhouse on April 1st. I am going to mom's. What a drag! It's like going back in time by a major step. At least I can save some extra money.

Helen found a new apartment near the Merritt Building by Lake Merritt on 7th Avenue. I guess that's a triumph for her. We will be closer for dinners after work. Nighty night.

Inspiration For A Screenwriter

Posted on 12:24 by Unknown

"The greatest revolution in our generation is that of human beings,
who by changing the inner attitudes of their minds,
can change the outer aspects of their lives."

-Marilyn Ferguson
in a 'Gemini New Moon' article
by Stephanie Austin
in Mountain Astrologer, pp.98,
April/May 2006 issue.

This past weekend I was asked by my college-freshman cousin, Gus Keller, to read the first draft of his script called 'Society Drive'. I was immediately impressed by his imagination. Now fast forward to this very morning as I was reading the Los Angeles Times.

There was an article about a screenwriter (Robert Mark Kamen) who collaborates with the French film producer/writer/visionary, Luc Besson (who turns 50 on March 18th). The article, "Writer is taken with Besson" made me think of my dear friend, Paloma, who resides in the romantic area of Sete, France (25 minutes by train from Montpellier). Both Paloma and Luc are huge fans of American cinema.
www.latimes.com/entertainment/la-et-bigpicture10-2009mar10,0,1238452.story

Robert Kamen is in writers' heaven because of their team efforts.

Kamen remembers the days of writing a great script that wouldn't go anywhere. It was frustrating as hell. Film scripts aren't books that belong on a self. They're meant to be made.

It gives me hope that my cousin, Gus Keller, will network and connect with other film aficionados so that he will have many films made. I feel his excitable spark and ambition.

When I see clips from Luc Besson films like "La Femme Nikita" or "The Professional" I thrive with excitement from the intensity of them.

Luc Bessons' "The Fifth Element" is his most commercially successful film. The article reveals that they are riding high on the recent success of the 2009 film, "Taken" which has a sequel in the works. I am also curious about the American version of the French film "District B13" that they have planned. The early word inspires me to be a part of the audience the next time around.

Paige and I went to eat breakfast at my mom's house. We then decided to drive out to Santa Cruz. Much to my dismay she screwed up the cassette player in my car. I shrugged it off.
"Oh heck, at least the radio operates," I said reassuringly to Paige.

It was a nice, beach day as the Spring season started to show. We drove to Los Gatos and had lunch at The Good Earth. We cruised on back to Alameda for R&R (rest & relaxation). I napped after the drive while Paige took a bath.

"You've changed," Paige said to me a later that afternoon.
"I have?" I asked as I realized she'd never knew me very well to know me in the first place.
I may have changed but I've learned that she is kind of messy (after just one night of staying as a guest in my home). She is so loud, too! Come to think of it she is actually quite annoying! The broken cassette player (that she broke) was starting to sink in. She slept with me in my bed tonight. Why should I sleep on the couch? That was all we did though. Sleep.

Maybe You'll Remember...

Posted on 14:42 by Unknown

Alan and I drove down to Palm Desert on Friday to visit with dear friends. Alan kindly did all of the driving as I read a few articles aloud and my book (Spring Moon by Bette Bao Lord). While we were in the car we heard some music on CDs that we had made a while ago. I heard a song that got me going. I just loved hearing the tune called 'Remember' by The Underdog Project. It's a Spanglish song (with lyrics in English and Spanish). I just love it and we kept playing it over and over.
http://search.live.com/video/results.aspx?q=remember%2C+the+underdog+project&docid=547778002958&FORM=VIVP

When we had phone reception and I had a voice mail message from Chris Cordellos. Yes, I located him via a google search. It seems he's a hair colorist & stylist 'extraodinaire' in Lafayette, CA. We still have to talk and catch up on lost time. I saw him in the mid-1990s when he was working at a hair salon called POSH STUDIO in Walnut Creek but we haven't spoken since. It will be interesting to catch up on lost time.

Twenty-five years ago:

January 17, 1984

I had to stay at work only until 2pm today because of my dentist appointment.

It feels good to listen to my car stereo once again. It brings about such emotion and inner feelings of excitement when the "right" song is playing.

The dentist took good care of everything. I don't have to return for another check-up until June 27, 1984. I was out of his office by 3:20pm. I missed mom by only minutes as she usually leaves the house by 3:15pm for her work at the Oakland Main post-office.

I decided to go to my place and get on my bicycle again. I just love that machine. I bet my bike can't wait until it has another bicycle companion. It probably wishes it could rest. I do want to buy another foreign bicycle.

Today I met Sheila and Liz on the beach as I rode by. Sheila's a cute blond. They were both freshman in high school though. How embarassing. What a drag. Though I sometimes wonder... Who knows? I told them I'd see them on Saturday as we exchanged a few words with one another.
"Maybe I'll see you on Saturday as I usually ride along here," I told them.

I just remembered that the El Taco gal, Nancy, has never called me. Oh well.

I haven't called Leslie Fonseca either. Perhaps that is no great loss. It's just an added attraction (her child). There were some familiar favorites seen as I continued to ride my bike along the shoreline in Alameda. There were some new prospects of both gender. It was quite interesting.

My brother, John, took Sherri out to dinner to "H's Lordships" in Berkeley, for her birthday. I chose to eat alone at the 'Sizzler'. The waitress, Katie, flirted--or so it seemed. I believe we both shared in the flirting. She was very nice but seemed to be that way with all of the guests.
"You look a lot like that actress, Jessica Lange, who was in that movie 'Frances'," I said as I realized the girl had no idea who I was speaking about.

Shit! Why do I have 'call waiting' when my phone doesn't even ring. I decided to break down and call Paloma myself. I was so glad that I called her. We had such a good talk about the subject of depression and 'why' and 'how' people should not be burdened and find a balance in life. Paloma and I may go dancing together tomorrow night at I-Beam in San Francisco. She even said she might come to visit on Sunday to watch the Mel Gibson movie "The Road Warrior" after we watch the SUPER BOWL.
"I promise I will give you a tour of Stinson Beach one day," she added.

I am getting to a high point of really liking Paloma once again. Where? And how far it will lead is undetermined.
"Well, Thank you for calling me and making me feel better over my depressed mood," Paloma said.
"Oh...you just need something that will brighten up your spirits," I assured her, "it could be as simple as buying a new scarf, a new friend, a new place, an old memory, an old story, a poem or a good old-fashioned movie."
I was so happy to know that I lifted her spirits. She did the same with mine.

January 18, 1984

I dressed a bit more exceptional for work today, wearing my brown tweed sport jacket. I received more than one or two 'double-takes', too.

I called Paloma more than a couple of times on this day. It was settled that I would come by to pick her up at 6:30pm. She wore a gray dress with black stripes. Coincidentally, I wore black with my gray "Bebe" brand jacket. We seemed to 'match' as the ideal couple.

We just did a random outing to Round Table Pizza (nothing fancy). It was funny when we were both 'carded'. We both proved our respective 'twenty-four' year old ages. After the pizza we went to the UC THEATER on University Avenue to see "Spetters", a film from Holland, directed by Paul Verhoeven
www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nyTX_BguFg
and a 1974 French comedy drama film called "Going Places" (Les Valseuses).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Going_Places_(1974_film)
They were entertaining films. I was a little surprised to learn of the explicit sex scenes. I was a little embarassed to look over at Paloma during those parts. I will never forget those movies as being entertaining and shocking. Both films proved 'There Is No Such Thing As Simple Love'.

I enjoyed our date. I kissed and hugged Paloma at her doorstep. She confirmed the date for SUPER BOWL Sunday (along with 'The Road Warrior' movie).
"I'm thinking of going back to France for good," she confessed.
I think she wanted to see or hear my reaction.
"Oh...ahh, no!" I exclaimed. I am wondering if she may be looking for a commitment with or from me? Am I reading too much into it?
I was impressed when she said she used to work for Paco Rabonne, the fashion designer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paco_Rabanne

Once I returned home I found John and Sherri on the couch, watching 'Joan Rivers' guest hosting on 'The Tonight Show'.
"Oh, Gilbert called...as did Alexis Budabin," John said.

I Believe Disco Is Back In Style

Posted on 14:53 by Unknown
She was the substance and I was the shadow.
--Philippa Gregory
a line I chose that reminds me of when I would dance with Paloma in the early 1980s

My first sign of the DISCO return was about two weeks ago when I opened a letter and found an invitation to a February 2009 Montessori School 'Saturday Night Fever' fundraiser in St. Helena (Napa Valley), California. Secondly, the closing scene of the hit movie 'Slumdog Millionaire' thrived on a group Disco dance groove. And as recently as two days ago my dear, Paloma, from Balaruc-Les-Bains (in the South of France) sent me a 'DISCO BITCH' CD which seems to be one of the rave songs 'in and around' France right now. I believe Paloma wanted to 'brainwash' me by repeatedly listening to the song. I have been doing 'just that' every time I am in the car. I like the mix of French and English it has going on.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEI6qz4Kzyk&feature=related
And what else:
1. On New Years Eve at the San Mateo County Expo Center (near San Francisco) a big 'DISCO 2009' event is being advertised.

2. Apparently there was a French film released in April of this year (2008) called DISCO. I hope it comes to the states. I'd love to see it. It's a French movie directed by Fabien Onteniente with Franck Dubosc as "Didier Travolta" in the main role. Here is what I found on the Internet movie data base:

The main subject of the 'DISCO' movie is the rebirth of disco music at the the mid-2000s in a French town. The film is at first humorous, with a lot of clichés about Saturday Night Fever, but it doesn't disparage the disco culture at any time. In fact, all the people involved in this film are fans of disco, dance and funk music.

I better start practicing my dance steps and shakin' my groove thing...just like the good ole days when Paloma and I used to dance at the I-BEAM Club in San Francisco (even if it was a few years passed the heart of Disco).

"Let's dance before dinner!"
"You're a wild card and I don't know how to play you," he said with brutal frankness.

--Philippa Gregory
as written in her book 'The Other Boleyn Girl'

Twenty-five years ago today:

It was fun today. Salima was on the telephone all day at work. She was seated next to me and making me realize how much I like and care for that girl. She is so super special and "simpatico".

I won "Samuel the Super Spaniel" for best sales yesterday. Hoorah! I am pleased.
I get to have the stuffed dog displayed on my desk for the day.

After work I arrived home and my brother, John, was joking around with his friend, Geoff Rookard. My pal, Suzy Miller, called and we arranged a holiday shopping date. It was coincidental because I had intentions of calling her at the same moment. Suzy came over to my place and we drove out to the Bay Fair Shopping Center in San Leandro. I bought myself a 'bicycle' ornament. We stopped over at the drive-thru Jack-In-The-Box and they tried to screw me over by mistakenly giving me the wrong order. I hate that. Suzy and I laughed, returning to my pad to munch out. She had to leave soon thereafter to cook her 'potluck' stuff for some holiday office affair the next day. She works for AT&T in Pleasanton, CA now.

My brother, John, was nice enough to give me twenty one-dollar bills. I better remember to pay him back. I like dealing with cash. John always has cash from his bar back/bartender in training job at GALLAGHERS at Jack London Square.

I have decided to make my New Year 2004 Resolution a 'no credit card' year. I want to pay only on a cash basis except in dire emergencies.

I watched some new funny show called "Oh Madeline" and then I quickly fell asleep.

Tomorrow is Wednesday and I guess Nici Maurino and I will be seeing SILKWOOD.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KGmkaoIbQo
Oh yes...Helen told me the Placement Center called her about a Directory Sales job. She is taking the test on January 10, 2004. I am so jealous. Suzy said her ex-boyfriend, Don, was promoted to supervisor. I am so jealous. I know my turn will come. I shall continue to be persistent, show stability and drive forward for what I want.
