A BREACH IN THE WALL (Sweden, 2002)
Screened: May 9, 2003, Tribeca Film Festival
Director: Jimmy Karlsson
Lars is a borderline-suicidal former mathematician who becomes disenchanted with modern life and takes a job as a substitute teacher in his small hometown. He regains his lust for life upon discovering that one of this pupils, Jonny, is a math genius. Meanwhile, Jonny's girlfriend, Claire, an activist and daughter of the local factory boss, falls for Lars. Karlsson, the Director, weaves math, politics, love and life's unpredictable turns into a study in slow-burn feelings where volumes of emotion are conveyed in simple silences.
My Comment: 4 STARS
"Nobody really knows what love is." (Love is a mathematical notion.)
"That's why it is wonderful to have someone to love."
"It's always there...the chance to change your LIFE."
I made the Director, Jimmy Karlsson, feel good the next day when I spotted him crossing the street in the Tribeca, New York area.
"Breach In The Wall...GREAT movie!" I shouted.
He smiled in a surprised way, "Oh Thanks!"
He really did some miraculous work with certain scenes. Then again, some extra film editing would not have hurt. There was a fatal accident/suicide that takes place at the end that was entirely unexpected. However, it was very 'true to life'. Life is not easy, after all. We do have choices and the power for things to change. The Director seems to have made his wish come true. I am wondering if the story was partly semi-autobiographical.

Wednesday
Today was A-OK. I departed at Noon and headed to Alameda, for mom's house. I had pancakes before I went to the dentist. Haha. Let the dentist do a deep cleaning after the maple syrup.
"You deserve a gold star because your teeth and such are doing so well," said Dr. James R. Hinkle.
After my dental appointment I stopped for freshly baked chicken at mom & pops house. I porked out to satisfy my hunger pangs. I napped at my pad until 5:30PM and then headed over to the Bay Area Sperm Bank in keeping with my Wednesday appointment. Once again I did not get a check from them.
I returned to mom and dad's house to deliver some of my work shirts. Mom agreed to iron and press them (out of the kindness of her heart). We had a good time joking about Dad being an "ex-convict" after the 'public drunkenness' arrest. It seems when he was let out of work at 7AM some of the fellow machinist guys encouraged him to go and have a drink. Happy Hour at 7AM? Alas, my Dad was one of the last to leave and when he went to his truck he had 'to go pee'. He took a 'pee' by the side of his FORD truck tire and a policemen witnessed it. The officer didn't have anything better to do, so he arrested him on that charge.
I continued my 'porking out' with a box of vanilla wafers and a tall glass of milk while watching the WHEEL OF FORTUNE. I'm so good at guessing right with this game show. I left for my pad to watch DYNASTY.
I also wrote Jim Koran (of Los Angeles) another letter. Then I took a hot shower and went straight to bed for the night. I couldn't sleep, so I caught up on a few phone calls. First, Bruce Goree was overdue with a reply. There was no answer there. Second, Frank Vasconcellos was overdue with a reply. He was not at home. I did chat with his mother briefly and she was very sweet. Thirdly, I telephoned Paloma. She, of course, was not at home either.
I decided to call mom and she was watching some movie starring Farrah Fawcett and Beau Bridges. Finally, I simply fell asleep as I wondered about the mystique of Jim Koran and Bob Umland. I chose NOT to call on either of those two.
"I'm erasing YOU!"
