What Is Babka?

"Breakfast, lunch and dinner, he could do without,
but afternoon tea mattered."
-Pat Barker
in his book "Regeneration"
This morning I was on the treadmill and a silly 1995 movie called CLUELESS was on the tube. I watched in amusement. Parts of the program made me laugh.

I recognized actress Brittany Murphy. She looked so young. She's come a long way when I think of that 'Faster Kill Pussycat' music video that I adore her in:

An hour later I was having coffee and I realized there was some fresh "babka". Babka is a sort of chocolate cake. Folded into the dough are chocolate chips, liquid chocolate marble, chocolate cake crumbs. It's a spongy yeast cake that is commonly eaten in Eastern Europe.

I just LOVE it. Yummy!
Most believe that babka is cake. However, the names babka and baba mean "grandmother". They do not have anything in connection to the cake, they literally mean grandmother, as in your mothers mother. Slovaks, Czechs and Polish call their grandmother Babka with no reference to the cake.
Twenty-five years ago today:
February 1, 1984, Wednesday
Work was a bit antagonizing with the dealings of snobbish customers and very few sales. I survived. I spoke to the new hire in the office named Steve Gaster. He graduated from Encinal High School in Alameda in 1977. He lives on Kitty Hawk Lane (not far from Suzy Miller. He said he plans to attend the GENESIS concert. I like some of their music.
I had lunch alone at the Pot Belly Deli once again. Upon my return walk to the office I ran into Nancy Guzman, the District Manager. We exchanged some minimal small talk.
"How are you today?" Nancy asked.
"I'm pretty good," I answered.
"Good," she replied as if she really meant it.
She was walking with two other 'snobbish' women. I was happy that she took notice of my presence.
After work I came home and looked through my mail. I straightened up a bit and actually ironed some clothes. I didn't do the exercise I had originally planned on because John & Sherri came over with the VHS-video of "Eddie and The Cruisers". I watched it with them because John raved about it being the best movie ever.

Once the ending credits started I swiftly headed out to SAFEWAY for some 'goodies'. John and Sherri were still there and I watched an episode of DYNASTY & HOTEL with them.
I have an inner sore inside my left ear. It must be a pimple. It feels strange. Ugh.
